Morning by Morning, August 23 - Overcomers by Trusting in the One Who Overcame Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your sheep hear Your voice, and I’m listening for Your leading to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit. ... This morning what comes as I wait for Your leading is this: “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Because You have overcome, we are overcomers. Because You are Peace, we have peace. This is the Promise of Your Word: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an Everlasting Rock.... (Isaiah 26:3-4 ESV) That’s how we overcome, no matter what comes against us. That’s how we hold our peace, even when there’s no peace around us. We keep our minds fixed on You. We keep our hearts near to You. We keep responding to Your call to come away with You in worship and praise and witness through everything that would tempt us to do just the opposite, even in the freedom to fully express our grief, to release our anger, to cry out for righteousness and justice in the face of a world in turmoil and tribulation. As Your Word goes on to say: “Come, My people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until the fury has passed by. For behold, the Lord is coming out from His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and the earth will disclose the blood shed on it, and will no more cover its slain” (Isaiah 26:20-21). In trusting prayer and confident hope in You to be with us through all we endure, with our brothers and sisters, with family and friends in faithful worship and persevering faith, we enter the chambers of Your Presence and come away with You in our hearts. We encourage one another, as we long for the day You will set things right. And at the same time, for every day between this day and that day to come, we keep our eyes on You, our minds on You, our hearts on You (1 Thessalonians 5:11). We trust You to give us the words to say and the things to do (Matthew 10:19). “Whenever (we are) afraid (or oppressed or persecuted or wrongfully judged), (we) will trust in You. In God (we) will praise His word, in God (we have) put (our) trust; (we) will not fear. What can flesh do to (us)?” (Psalm 56:3-4) You promise much to those who keep their hearts and minds fixed on You, to those who are overcomers because they keep their hope and faith in the One who has already overcome (Revelation 2:26; James 1:12; Matthew 5:10; and so many other Scriptures). “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies” (2 Corinthians 4:7-10). By the mercy and power of Your grace, keep giving me and all my brothers and sisters at home and around the world the heart of an overcomer, as we keep entrusting our hearts to the One who has overcome. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
