Morning by Morning, September 6 - Casting and Mending Our Nets Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your voice and the leading of Your Spirit, as I watch and wait in the deep communion of intimacy with You in prayer -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him. “Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him” (Matthew 4:17-22). When You called Peter, he was casting his net into the sea. When You called John, he was mending his net to be ready to be cast into the sea. Both were called and commissioned by You to become “fishers of men.” Both would be part of a great move of Your Holy Spirit to gather the hearts and souls of men and women to know You and embrace You and surrender their lives in trusting faith to You. And, at the same time, what they were doing at the time they were called would also be reflected in their seasons of ministry to come -- Peter casting his nets and John mending his nets. Peter would cast his nets and bring in a great harvest of souls on the Day of Pentecost when about three thousand souls were saved (Acts 2:41) and after that “the Lord added to the church daily those were being saved” (Acts 2:47). John would go on to mend his nets to being healing, guidance, discipleship, and equipping in the ongoing ministry of spiritual maturity in the hearts and souls of those being drawn in by the nets of salvation and then mended in the nets of sanctification. He would write the Books of John and Revelation, along with the Epistles of 1st John, 2nd John, and 3rd John to strengthen and encourage the church. Both the casting and the mending of the nets were needed then and still today. Some of us are called to cast the nets; some of us are called to mend the nets; some are called to both in different seasons or different times. So let us hear Your call and embrace Your commission to be about the work of Your kingdom, whether casting or mending, in the grace of God -- “for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
