Morning by Morning, February 6, 2025 - National Prayer Breakfast: “Bring God Back into Our Lives” Good morning, Lord Jesus. I “set (my) mind on things above” as I “seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God” to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit (Colossians 3:1-2). ... This morning, the President of the United States spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in our nation’s capitol. From his place of governmental authority, he was speaking from a place of spiritual humility to call his fellow Americans to “bring God back into our lives.” The President confessed, “It changed something in me,” when he was miraculously saved from an assassin’s bullet. And he affirmed our constitutional freedom of religious liberty as “part of the bedrock of American life” to be protected with “absolute devotion.” His words remind me this morning of King Solomon’s prayer from his place of governmental authority for the nation of Israel on the day of the dedication of the temple of God in Jerusalem: “Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands (for Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court; and he stood on it, knelt down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven); and he said: ‘Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven or on earth like You, who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts’.... ‘“But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You: that Your eyes may be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your name, that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes toward this place. And may You hear the supplications of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and when You hear, forgive’” (2 Chronicles 6:12-21). King Solomon continued his prayer with humility of heart, entrusting his heart and his nation to You, entreating You to intervene in every struggle his nation would face (2 Chronicles 6:22-42). On behalf of the people of the nation, he prayed You would “hear from heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive Your people who have sinned against You,” beseeching You would “let Your eyes be open and let Your ears be attentive to the prayer made in this place” (v. 39-40). Then You responded to Solomon’s prayers on behalf of his nation in a mighty move of Your power and glory: “When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. And the priests could not enter the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house. When all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord on the temple, they bowed their faces to the ground on the pavement, and worshiped and praised the Lord, saying:
“‘For He is good, For His mercy endures forever!’” (2 Chronicles 7:1-3). Lord, send Your Holy Fire upon our nation. Fill our hearts and our nation with Your Holy Spirit and the Glory of the Lord. We bow our hearts before You, we lift up our prayers and praises to You, for You are good and Your mercy endures forever! May we seek to “bring God back into our lives” in every heart and throughout our land. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
