Father, Son, and Holy Spirit 6-25-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome the Holy Spirit to center my thoughts on You, as You perfectly reveal the heart of our Father. Cause my heart to be more like Your heart each day. ... Lord Jesus, You and the Holy Spirit and the Father are One; and You come to make Your home in us, dwelling in the hearts and souls of Your people (John 14.1-31). You are the Vine and we are the branches. You cleanse us by Your Word and abide in us by Your Spirit, that we may bear the fruit of Your love in the earth (John 15.1-17). We do not belong to the world, but You have chosen us out of the world to be a witness of Your truth and love and word in the world (John 15.18-27). Yet we will stand firm as we stand in You and You stand in us. We will speak the truth as we abide in You and You abide in us, for You are the Truth and You have given us Your Spirit of Truth, Who always speaks of You and reveals the heart of the Father of Truth. "When the Advocate comes, Whom I will send to You from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes from the Father, He will testify on My behalf" (John 15.26). As Your Holy Spirit comes and dwells in our hearts and souls in increasing measure, to the degree we submit and entrust our lives to You, we understand more of Your ways and seek to live our lives in more of Your nature. "When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but will speak whatever He hears, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify Me, because He will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is Mine. For this reason I said I will take what is Mine and declare it to you" (John 16.16-13). Yes, Lord. Cleanse us in Your Word and fill us with Your Spirit. Conform our hearts to the heart of our Father, conform our minds to the mind of Christ, fill our lives with the life of Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! "Word of Christ" 6-24-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Open my ears to hear Your Word, open my eyes to see what You are doing, open my heart to receive Your love, open my mind to understand Your wisdom. In these moments of the morning, shut me away with You, Lord -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. ... "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish each other in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Colossians 3.16-17). Yes, Lord. Let Your word dwell in us richly -- Your written Word and Your living Word. You are the Word made flesh and You are the Word Who has come to dwell in our hearts by Your Spirit, to the glory of our Father, in the name of the Son. Giving thanks and singing songs to You opens our human spirits to receive Your Holy Spirit. Lifting up words of thanksgiving and praise to You opens our hearts and minds to receive the word of Christ. Then You come and dwell richly in the depths of our being. You come and mold us more into Your nature, teach us more of Your wisdom, and direct us more into Your purpose. As we receive from You, so we give to one another. Come dwell richly in us today, holy Word of God, living Word of Christ. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Spiritual Pneumonia 6-23-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I breathe in the breath of Your Spirit. ... As the lungs draw in the air to oxygenate the blood, let our human spirits draw in Your Holy Spirit to sanctify our souls. As the worship song says, "You are the air I breathe.... Your Holy Presence, living in me." "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breathe of the Almighty gives me life" (Job 33.4). Your Spirit is the breath of life that quickens our human spirit to know You, to praise You, to live our lives for You, as long as we have breathe. "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!" (Psalm 150.6). You've been reminding me that the root word for "spirit" and "breath" in the New Testament is the Greek word "pneuma." This must be the same root word for pneumonia. You desire to fill our souls with the life-giving breath of Your Spirit, while the enemy of our souls desires to fill our lungs and our lives with infection and disease to steal away the breath of life. Pneumonia is a picture in the physical realm of the enemy's strategy in the spiritual realm. We are to be continually emptied of ourselves and continually filled with You -- to "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5.18). By attacking our spiritual lungs to keep us sick and diseased, we cannot breathe in the breath of Your life. When we are filled up with the unholy things of the world, the flesh, and the devil, we cannot be filled with Your Holy Spirit. Create in us a clean heart, O God; and cleanse our souls with Your Presence. Restore unto us the joy of our salvation and renew a right spirit within us (Psalm 51.10-12). You came to Your first disciples and "breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit' " (John 20.22). Breathe on us today, Lord Jesus. Fill us afresh and continually with Your Holy Spirit. Cleanse us in Your life-giving blood, fill us with Your life-giving Spirit, and deliver us from spiritual pneumonia. Let Your Holy Presence live in us and through us to Your glory. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Shadow of Your Wings 6-22-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Each day is a new day to experience Your grace in a new way. Open the eyes of my spirit to see You now, that I may see You moving in every circumstance throughout this day. ... "My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises You with joyful lips when I think of You on my bed, and meditate on You in the watches of the night; for You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me" (Psalm 63.5-8). Under the shadow of Your wings, we know You are there soaring over our lives as an eagle, keenly aware of all that surrounds us. In the palm of Your right hand, You hold us secure, helping us release our burdens and worries to You. In the intimacy and intensity of our souls clinging to You, we are freed to stand firm in the confidence of Your power and Your presence in all that we face. You are abiding in us and we are abiding in You. Draw our thoughts to think of You, open our hearts to meditate on You, as we begin the experience of each new day. Then our mouths will praise You and our spirits will thank You for the peace and joy of Your presence with us throughout every circumstance of every day. This is the rich feast of the security of Your presence with us through it all that satisfies our longings and fulfills our desires. Nothing else and no one else will do. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! "Sing to Me" 6-21-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill my heart with Your Spirit, as You form my heart to be more like my Father's heart each day. ... "Sing to me, PaPa." In the physical realm my three year old son, Elijah, just wanted to hear his great-grandfather sing his simple song again as he held his hand at the edge of the hospital bed. In the spiritual realm, the Holy Spirit of God was calling deep to deep, as the breath of Life filled PaPa's lungs every time he rose to the call of a little boy's heart. "One day at a time, Sweet Jesus, that's all I'm asking of You. Just show me the way, hmm hmm hmm hmm, one day at a time." You were using that old song and that little boy's unrelenting, sweet little voice to cause Life to overcome death for yet another season, as the spirit of pneumonia gave way to the Spirit of the Breath of God. Then it was Elijah's turn to sing back his little song -- one of his great-grandmother's favorite little songs that she's taught all of us to sing at an early age: "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away." The nurses seemed to keep finding reasons to come stand at the door, as we would clap and laugh with each chorus of this medley of healing. "A cheerful heart is a good medicine" (Proverbs 17.22). PaPa's doctor, a man from India, marveled and said he was "one hundred percent better." He is discharging him to return home today. He said our coming to visit had "worked magic," but we said, "Praise God!" You are the God Who sings over us (Zephaniah 3.17). You are the God Who heals us of our diseases and redeems our lives from destruction (Psalm 103.1-5). You call us to prayer and to praise because You know the power You release through a humbled heart singing praises to Your name. Though we wonder at the mystery when healing does not come this side of heaven, we rejoice when it does. No doubt there will be struggles and challenges to come, but it seems You have not yet fulfilled all that You have purposed through this life. "But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, so that those who love Your name may exalt in You. For You bless the righteous, O Lord; You cover them with favor as with a shield" (Psalm 5.11-12). In the power of Your righteousness, where we stand in Christ alone under the covering of Your blood, our spiritual enemy who comes to steal and kill and destroy is defeated. He will not steal away our lives before our destiny is fulfilled, as we take refuge rejoicing in You. You redeem even the blows he strikes and the temporary victories he seems to win, by the power of Your life and the breath of Your Spirit. Sometimes we see signs of the victory and sometimes we have no idea of all You are doing beyond the veil of our natural senses. Regardless of the apparent outcome of each battle, the victory is already won through the sacrifice of Your cross, the glory of Your resurrection, and the certainty of Your return. This day is a good day. Keep giving us each the grace to take each day one day at a time. We'll never know how that day will end unless we press through, persevering in faith, by Your grace, to see it. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please keep my grandfather Hays in your prayers. Becuase there have been frequent battles with pnuemonia resulting from food coming in his lungs, they inserted a feeding tube in his stomoch, not through his mouth. He will still be mobile, active, and able to talk and sing, but no longer recieving food through the throat, which will require much adjustment and much grace. God bless you as we pray for one another. Wisdom and Revelation 6-20-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Direct my paths and guide my thoughts today. ... By Your Holy Spirit, You guided Paul to pray Your heart for Your people: "I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know Him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, which are the riches of His glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power for us who believe, according to the working of His great power" (Ephesians 1.17-19). You impart to us Your wisdom and open our eyes to see Your revelation as we come to know You. It is as we come to know You, that we grow into maturity. To know You is to grow in our understanding of Your nature and Your ways, while also growing in the intimacy of relationship with You. As we walk with You, we begin to walk more like You. As we listen to You speak, we begin to speak more like You. As we commit ourselves to You, we become more like You. This is how You are conforming us to the image of Christ, that we might grow into our calling of bearing the image of Christ in this world, all by Your grace. As we grow into maturity, You are able to reveal more of Your nature through Your people in every circumstance. In times of confusion, You reveal Your wisdom. In times of turmoil, You reveal Your peace. In times of rejoicing, You reveal Your joy. This is the hope to which You have called us; this is Your glorious inheritance among Your saints -- all according to the working of Your great power. Amazingly, You have chosen to manifest Your great power through Your people, as we come to know You. Give us Your wisdom and revelation to understand the nature and purpose of this calling. Give us the humility to seek it and the faith to receive it. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! "One Day at a Time" 6-19-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me in the ways that lead to life today. ... We came to see my grandfather Hays yesterday, who's struggling in another battle for his life at ninety-six years old. We've always called him "Pawpaw" and spelled it "PaPa." They brought to a room in the hospital where I was born, next to one of the sandy cotton fields like he farmed most of his life outside this little west Texas town of Lamesa. We will be making some hard decisions about his life and the quality of his life. We need Your wisdom and we seek to follow Your ways. Thank You for Your promise to always provide it when we seek it. "If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, Who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to you" (James 1.5). After I talked to the nurse yesterday, he asked what we were talking about as I held him by the hand. It's hard for him to hear and hard for me to explain, so I said the words that came to mind, "We just need to take it one day at time, PaPa." He looked up toward the ceiling and started singing an old song in his tired, hoarse voice: "One day at a time, sweet Jesus, that's all I'm asking of You." That's all he could remember, so he sang it again, "One day at time, sweet Jesus, that's all I'm asking of You." He smiled and I know You smiled over him. As You said long ago, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear.... So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today" (Matthew 6.25-34). I guess that's Your way of saying, "One day at time." Thank You for the wisdom and the grace You bring each day to meet our needs for that day, one day at a time. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, we would appreciate your prayers for Nanny and PaPa and our family as we seek the Lord's leading for decisions. This was an unexpected event on our vacation but we are glad to be out in this part of the world to help. God bless you and your family. The Shepherd's Staff 6-18-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me listen; help me hear. Help me be quiet enough to sense the leading of Your voice. ... You are the Good Shepherd. You care for Your flock and tend to our needs. You know when to make us lie down and when to lead us beside the still waters. You bind up our wounds and free us from our snares. You defend us from those who would destroy us, and You lay down Your life for Your sheep (Psalm 23; John 10.11). Then You call us to feed and nurture one another as Your disciples -- learning from Your ways and following the leading of Your voice (John 21.15-19). Some may tend flocks of thousands, some may tend to the needs of one or two; but throughout the seasons of our lives and throughout our spheres of influence, we are all called to learn and lead in the way of our Good Shepherd. Because You have a Shepherd's heart and You want us to have Your heart, Your heart is broken and Your wrath is kindled against the shepherds who fail to lovingly tend their flocks. To express Your fury at the destruction of Your people who were not shepherded in faithfulness to Your leading, You told the prophet Zechariah to "be a shepherd of the flock doomed to slaughter" to reveal the heart of a "worthless shepherd who deserts the flock." Through him, You would demonstrate the leadership of "a shepherd who does not care for the perishing, or seek the wandering, or heal the maimed, or nourish the healthy, but devours the flesh of the fat ones" (Zechariah 11.4-17). You spoke of two staffs of leadership in the shepherd's hands -- the staff of Favor and the staff of Unity. Broken, these two staffs became "the implements of a worthless shepherd" (Zechariah 11.14). As the flock of Your pasture, You desire us to receive and give the favor of Your grace. When we take without giving and turn selfishly to ourselves, the staff of Favor is broken. You desire that we love one another and encouraged one another. When we give in to division and strife, contentiousness and envy, the staff of Unity is broken. Forgive us, Lord. Restore to us the heart of the Good Shepherd. Place again in our hands Your staffs of Favor and Unity. Then even though we walk through the darkest and deepest valleys, we will know that You lead us through as we learn Your ways -- Your rod and Your staff will comfort us (Psalm 23.4). In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Looking Up 6-17-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. The tall pines on the sides of the mountains point to the peaks, and the peaks point to the sky. So if lift up heart and point my thoughts to You. ... There is something about looking up and lifting our faces to the sky, that naturally draws our spirits up to You in worship and praise and prayer. Pine trees and steeple spires point to the heavens and draw our thoughts high to the heavenlies. "So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God" (Colossians 3.1-3). Though You are everywhere, the physical act of looking up seems to capture our spiritual state of looking to You. At the grave of Lazarus, You wanted everyone to know You were looking to the Father to listen for His leading in all You said and did. "And Jesus looked upward and said, 'Father, I thank You for having heard Me. I knew that You always hear Me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that You have sent Me" (John 11.42). Father, we thank You for having heard us. We thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to rise up within our human spirits and lift up our hearts to You. We thank You for sending our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Who is always at Your right hand, seated with You above. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us in these three dimensions of Your Being. Thank You for the grace to seek You and to find You, as we look up to You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, though my family and I are still out in New Mexico, our ministry will be leading The Fountain in Lexington Saturday night, so please come if you can. We're thankful for the prayer covering from all who can't. "Selah" 6-16-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. "Selah" -- it is good to "pause and reflect" on Your deeper purposes and power eternally unfolding beneath the hurriedness of the moments of our lives. ... You hold all things in Your hands. There is peace in the security of Your sovereignty. Though men make their choices and fallen angels war against Your will, You are at work to redeem all things to accomplish Your purposes. Though time unfolds in our lives moment by moment and day by day, with the passing of every decision we make, You already see it all. All things are already present to You. You already know every choice that will be made, the consequence of every sinful rebellion against Your will, the power of every sacrifice in submission to Your call, and the glory of Your redemption of it all, in Your timing and in Your way. Though You are the Ancient of Days, You are the King Who is coming in glory, and You are a very present help now in every moment of our days. "For I am God, and there is no other; I am God and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from the ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My purpose shall stand, and I will fulfill My intention' " (Isaiah 46.9-10). Yes, Lord. Rule and reign in our hearts, redeeming all things in accordance with Your purpose. Give us faith to believe You are at work through it all. Give us the peace that comes from knowing we have entrusted it all to You, as best as we can, all by Your grace. Time marches on, but it marches in submission to Your command. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Be encouraged this day! Beauty of Diversity 6-15-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. All creation declares Your glory, for all things were created through You and for You (Colossians 1.16). I join in that declaration at the beginning of this new day. ... Traveling from the desert of El Paso to the mountains of New Mexico, it's easy to see that all of Your creation holds its own beauty. That beauty is revealed in stark contrast. You are our Creator and You are a creative God. The intricacies and diversities of all that flows from Your hand to form the life and beauty that surrounds us declares Your glory. "Ever since the creation of the world His eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things He has made" (Romans 1.20). You glory is revealed in diversity of Your people as well. No two are the same, nor are they intended to be. We have diverse beginnings, cultures, gifting, and calling; yet, each is as beautiful as the other and each is created to display Your glory. "For we are what He has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life" (Ephesians 2.10). Free us from comparing ourselves to others and comparing one another. Free us to see the creativity and diversity of Your glory in their hearts and in ours. In Jesus' name we pray. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please Come to The Fountain this Sat night at 7pm in the Chapel of Centenary Methodist in Lexington -- our ministry's monthly citywide gathering for prayer, praise, and healing worship. The Gate 6-14-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Draw me close to You in prayer as Your Spirit fills my soul afresh this day. ... We woke up this morning in El Paso -- the passageway or gateway. It is a gateway between nations. From the window of our room, I can see across the river to the homes and businesses of another nation, as the sun rises on both of our lands this morning. For these two nations and for all people of all nations, You are the Gateway of life. You said, "I am the Gate. Whoever enters by Me will be saved, and come in and go out and find pasture" (John 10.9). Though tens of thousands of people have heard Your name on both sides of this river, how many have entered in through Your gate, into a living relationship with You? Though it is Your heart and it is Your heart in us that all would enter in, they will not. "For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it" (Matthew 7.14). Even among those who have found the gate of eternal life in You, few press on in beyond the gate and into the garden. Few answer the calling and leading of Your Spirit to venture beyond the outer walls to explore the riches of the depths of relationship with You. Most settle for the superficial, allowing fear and insecurity and pride to hold them back from all You have prepared for us to experience. Free us from what holds us back. Release us to deeper relationship. Draw us through Your gates and into Your gardens. Let us hear the call of Your Holy Spirit, "Go through, go through the gates" (Isaiah 62.10). You have prepared the way, for You are the Way. We can enter in the gates of Your presence for You are the Gate. We can follow the road that leads to life, abundant life in increasing depths of relationship with You, for You are the Life. Let us be among those few who find it, even as we pray for all to enter in through You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, my family and I are out in west Texas and New Mexico for our summer vacation to spend time with family for our vacation. With an earlier time zone and grace for rest, I plan to continue to my morning prayer times and send them out, but they may come a little later. It's good to pray even when you're on vacation! Look, Listen, and Linger 6-13-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let me look, listen, and linger in Your presence at the start of this day. ... "O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. O that today you would listen to His voice" (Psalm 95.6-7). Before we rise to greet each day, let us first bow down to greet You. Before we begin listen the needs and concerns of others, let us first listen for leading of Your voice. Before we set out hands to the plow of our work and ministry for the day, let us first lift our hands in praise to the One Who holds all things in His hands. This is a form of the humility You desire -- to seek You first, to wait upon Your leading, to give You the place of priority in our lives. It slays our pride to wait in the silence before You, and it humbles our hearts to listen for Your leading. But then when we rise to go forth, we rise in the power of Your strength and we go forth in confidence of Your presence. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please Come to The Fountain this Sat night at 7pm in the Chapel of Centenary Methodist in Lexington -- our ministry's monthly citywide gathering for prayer, praise, and healing worship. Doubting Thomas' Faith 6-12-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill me with Your Spirit, wash me in Your Word. ... Though Thomas doubted You, You redeemed his doubt into faith. He doubted Your resurrection, telling the other disciples, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in His hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in His side, I will not believe" (John 20.25). His doubt hardened into pride. His perspective of "unless I" turned into his attitude of "I will not." How often our doubt and unbelief leads us into arrogance and pride. We are blocked from the blessings of Your grace and hindered from the peace of Your presence because we will not believe Your Word will come to pass. You told Thomas and the others they would not see You for awhile, then in a little while they would see You again, that their sorrow would be turned to joy (John 16.16-22). Your Word always comes to pass; it never returns void but always accomplishes Your purpose for which You send it (Isaiah 55.11). Your Word breaks through our pride and speaks to our doubting hearts as You spoke to Thomas' heart that day. "Do not doubt, but believe" (John 20.27). He was humbled by Your Word and redeemed in Your presence. He who was bound in doubt and unbelief was freed to proclaim in boldness and faith the highest declaration anyone ever spoke of You on earth: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20.28). You love to take our doubts and transform them into faith. You love to break through our pride and humble us in Your presence. You take what seems to be our curse and redeem it into our blessing. Thank You for the blessing of faith that overcomes the curse of doubt. Thank You for not giving up on us, but persisting in calling forth the blessing hidden beneath the curse. Mystery of Marriage with Christ 6-11-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I want to know You and be known by You. I want to abide in You and know You abide in me -- in the closest communion the created can have with the Creator. ... The union You desire between the Creator and the created, between Christ and the church, is a great mystery of faith. Through the abiding of Your Holy Spirit within us, we are the body of Christ and the bride of Christ -- created for union and prepared in communion to be one with You in Spirit as a man and woman become one in marriage: "In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one every hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of His body. 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church" (Ephesians 5.28-32). Father, help us understand more of this mystery. Help us to embrace and experience this mystery as the plan and purpose of our creation. You are Love and You have created us for a relationship of love with You. Love requires relationship. As God, You are One in the perfect union of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As our God Who created us for union in the mystery of faith, You are making us one with You, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world. "Anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him" (1 Corinthians 6.17). What an amazing mystery, what an amazing honor. Lord, let it be so. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please cover us in prayer as I teach and minister on inner healing and deliverance that prepares the bride of Christ at Church of the Savior in Lexington, Ky tonight at 6:30. aGod bless you as the Holy Spirit continues to prepare you for the coming of our King. Face to Face 6-10-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I seek Your face and need Your grace. ... "When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance to the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses.... Thus the Lord used to speak with Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend" (Exodus 33.9-11). Moses pursued Your presence. He withdrew from everything else to seek Your face, to listen for Your voice, to spend time alone with You in the intimacy of prayer. He was Your follower and he was Your friend. What could be a more worthy pursuit? What could be a more important priority for our lives? It was as he entered the tent, that that the pillar of cloud of Your presence came. You came to him as he sought You. There is a pursuit of Your presence You desire. Forgive us for failing to pursue You, for being passive in our prayer life and apathetic in our relationship. There is something in the heart of one who presses through and presses in to seek Your face that draws Your presence. Even that desire comes from You by Your grace. Give us that desire and that determination. Give us the passion to press through and pursue Your presence. We want to experience increasing depths of intimacy in prayer, as You teach us how to speak with You "face to face, as one speaks to a friend." In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Outside the Camp 6-9-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me get quiet and settle in to the place of the peace of Your presence. ... "Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp" (Exodus 33.7). When I pray in the mornings, I like to slip a covering over my head. It's become a physical act of the spiritual truth that I am slipping away from the world for a while to be alone with You, under the covering of Your presence. It's like pitching my tent outside the camp, far off from everything else that distract me or divert me from my morning mission of the communion of prayer. Even the children have learned to quietly slip back and give Daddy a little space when his head is covered in prayer -- most mornings, anyway. As we seek Your presence in the communion of prayer, our human spirits become the tent of meeting with Your Holy Spirit. "Deep calls to deep" (Psalm 46.7). The tent of our body becomes "a temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6.19). There, in the quiet of the morning or whenever we can slip away from the camp of the chaos of our lives for a moment, we have a chance of getting quiet enough to hear Your still, small voice. And all is well, no matter what's going on back at camp. Even when its time to pull back the covering of quiet and return to camp, the tent of meeting remains -- way down deep inside. Teach us how to enter the tent and never leave; teach us how to carry on the communion of prayer throughout our day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Always Here 6-8-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are my Lord, my Savior, my Best Friend. ... "And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28.20). Yes, Lord. You never leave us and never forsake us (Joshua 1.5; Hebrews 13.5). We know You as our Father God; we know You as Savior and Son; we know as the Spirit of God Who lives in our hearts. You are always here; You are always near. No matter what may come, we face it all with You. I hear the voice of Your Spirit singing a song of comfort over Your children: "You are not abandoned. You are not alone. You are not a stranger. You are always home. For I am always with you; I am always here. Just call upon My name, and I will draw near. Just call My name. Just call My name. You don't have to worry; you don't have to wait. I will always come, when you call My name." We sing back to You, Father: "You are our perfect Father. You are our perfect Friend. You are always with us, even to the end. Hold us in Your arms; take us by the hand. As we walk with You, 'til we're home at last." In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! My Redeemer Lives 6-7-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift my eyes to You and seek to see the glory of Your face. I long and pray for the day I will see You face to face, never being satisfied with anything less. This is my desire because You have placed this desire in our hearts. ... Though yesterday was a hard day for my family, Your Spirit woke me and called me to prayer with a song of praise rising in my spirit this morning: "For I know my redeemer lives..." These were Job's words as he cried out to you in the dark night of his soul. Even in the depths of his struggles with overwhelming loss and pain, he trusted You. Few of us have suffered has he suffered, but we can all learn from the witness of his faith. You gave him grace to persevere, to keep seeking, keep hoping, keep pressing on no matter what. Like us, he lived in the midst of a broken, fallen world. He was surrounded by confusion, accusation, suffering, and pain. He was hurt and disappointed by the reactions and responses of family and friends. He was relentlessly pursued by the enemy of his soul, who came to steal and kill and destroy. He was troubled by theology and struggled for understanding. Yet, he kept turning his eyes to You, kept seeking Your face, kept standing in faith -- all by Your grace. "For I know my Redeemer lives, and that at last He will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has thus been destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me" (Job 19.25-27). Apart from You and the grace You give, "There is no one who is righteous, not even one; there is no one who has understanding, there is no one who seeks God" (Romans 3.10-11). In our flesh, none is righteous, not even Job. None is immune from suffering -- not even "God's children" when "the whole world lies under the power of the evil one" (1 John 5.19). But You did not waste a moment of his suffering, and we have yet to see the fullness of all that happened in the spiritual realm of eternity as a man of flesh and blood continued to seek You and call upon Your name in the midst of devastation and suffering. You redeem all things, even causing what was sent from hell itself to work together for good for those who love You and seek You and keep calling upon Your name (Romans 8.28; 2 Corinthians 12.7). Even what was intended by others for our harm and destruction, You intend for our good -- using all things to draw us nearer to You in deeper depths of intimacy and trust, redeeming all circumstances to accomplish Your greater purposes (Genesis 50.20). In the end, You will stand upon the earth -- with Your creation redeemed by the power of Your love -- and in Christ, we will stand with You. Give us grace to persevere that we may stand with You in faith now, so that we may stand with You in victory on that day. May there be many others standing with us on that day because they saw You standing with us on these hard days now. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! "I Am Here" 6-6-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Open the eyes of my heart to see You; open the ears of my spirit to hear You. ... You are speaking to each one of us, wherever we are and whatever our need: "Come walk with Me, for I am here. I've been waiting for you to come. I'm always here. I'm always near. I'm always here for you." "The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desire of all who fear Him; He also hears their cry and saves them" (Psalm 145.18-19). Thank You, Lord, for always being near, for always being willing to hear. You are our strength in times of weakness, our shelter in times of trouble, our hope in times of need. Give us the humility to call upon You and the faith to know You will answer. Give us the patience to wait for Your timing and Your way; and give us Your grace that makes it possible to persevere no matter what comes our way. No matter what comes, You will be here with us. That's what You do; that's Who You are. As was prophesied of Your coming, " 'Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name Him Emmanuel,' which means, 'God is with us' " (Matthew 1.23). If You are with us, who can stand against us. If You are near, we are never alone. If You hold the world in Your hands, we are in good hands. Thank You for the calming peace and sure hope that always brings. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Each Day 6-5-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Thank You for the blessing of beginning each day with You. ... "David left Asaph and his kinsfolk there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark as each day required..." (1 Chronicles 16.37). The call to ritual in the Old Covenant speaks of the call to relationship under the New. We are those You have called to come before You in worship and prayer to minister to You each day. You taught us to pray to receive each day our daily bread (Luke 11.3), but You also long for us to give to You each day the surrender of our hearts in worship and prayer. "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20.35). As we learn to give our hearts to You as we minister each day before the ark of Your presence, we receive far more than we could ever earn and far more than we could ever deserve. You give us the gift of Your presence and receive the gift of our praise. Let our ministry to You be the beginning of each day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Corpus Christi 6-4-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. All glory and honor and praise to the King. You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Come rule and reign in my heart this day. ... "Corpus Christi" is the proper name and prophetic destiny of this city in Texas where we have been in ministry this week. Translated from Latin, it literally means "Body of Christ." Last night, we were. A move of the Holy Spirit in this city is bringing together the body of Christ from every tongue and tribe and nation, from every tradition and stream and denomination under the banner of Christ. They gather for worship on the First Friday of every month in a different church with a different speaker and a different worship team. The first gathering was at a downtown Baptist church, this second gathering was at suburban Catholic church. Next month they will gather at a Church of Christ and begin with a praise and worship team from another church. The walls are coming down and Your name is being lifted high! There is no move to sort out all the doctrines or styles of worship. There is no move to build a building or debate theology. This is just a move of the Spirit, lifting hearts to Jesus, to glory of our Father, Who calls us all His children -- as diverse and different as we are. This is a picture of the Father's heart, as Your Holy Spirit is preparing the body and bride of Christ throughout the earth in these last days -- the children of God "making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4.3). "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4.4-6). Lord, what You are doing in Corpus Christi is a prophetic picture of what You long to do throughout the earth. "How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity...For there the Lord ordained His blessing, life forevermore" (Psalm 133.1-3). Make us one in the Spirit, that we may be the body of blessing revealing the Life of Christ throughout the earth. Father, You are answering the prayer of Jesus, "that they may all be one...so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me" (John 17.20-24). Lord, let it be so in our generation. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Come Just As You Are 6-3-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I come to You and call upon Your name, as I begin this day entrusting my heart and my life to You. ... One of the songs of invitation to come receive new life in Christ was on my heart as I woke this morning: "Come just as you are; hear the Spirit call. Come just as you are. Come and see; come receive; come and live forever. Life everlasting, strength for today; Taste the Living Water, and never thirst again." The Samaritan woman at the well didn't know the gift of God she had standing in her midst that day. She couldn't understand why You were willing to speak with her, when all the tradition and religion and culture of the day stood between you. Man-made rules are often the enemy of God-ordained relationships. But there You were, stepping across every dividing line -- even the shame of her past she held hidden in her heart -- to offer new life to her soul (John 4.1-42). "Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God, and Who it is that is saying to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.' ... Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life" (John 4.10-14). Here You stand in our midst every day, only a prayer away. Yet how often we do not ask. How often do we turn to the rules and substitutes of tradition and religion and culture to fill us with life for the day instead of relationship with You. Those things will always leave us empty and thirsty because they can never satisfy the thirst of our souls. You are the Gift of God and You are here to receive us and fill us whenever we call, just as we are. Come fill us today with the Living Water of Your Spirit, and let it come gushing out of us to draw others into eternal life with You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Voice of the Lord 6-2-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Light for my path and the Guide for my journey. Give me wisdom to look and listen for Your leading every day. ... "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God" (Romans 8.14). We cannot understand the Christian walk apart of from understanding Your Holy Spirit. The children of God are led by the Spirit of God, so if we are not being led by Your Holy Spirit, are we really the children of God? At best, we would be rebellious and disobedient children, turning to our own wisdom and ways to live our lives independent of You. And how can we be led by Your Spirit unless we know Your Spirit? And how can we listen for Your leading unless we've learned to hear Your voice? You said, "My sheep hear My voice. I know them and they follow Me" (John 10.27). Not only is it a blessing to learn to know Your voice, it is essential if we are truly Your disciples who will truly follow You. If we are to be the body of Christ filled with the Spirit of Christ, if we are to be the bride of Christ being prepared to live eternally in the intimacy of union with You, then we must learn to listen and hear Your voice. "He who has the bride is the Bridegroom. The friend of the Bridegroom, who stands and hears Him, rejoices greatly at the Bridegroom's voice. For this reason my joy has been fulfilled" (John 3.29). Fill us with the joy of hearing Your voice. Free us from the confusion of the voices that would lead us astray. Teach us to be quiet, to listen, and to wait for the leading of Your voice spoken to our hearts by Your Spirit. This is the blessing and the heritage of the children of God and we are Your children. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Like You, Lord 6-1-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Cause Your thoughts to be my thoughts and Your desires to be my desires. I choose to embrace You as the goal and pattern for my life. Make me more like You each day, even though the process exposes every way that I am not yet like You. ... The path of becoming like You has a price. Someone has said, "Grace is free, but it will cost you everything." It's not easy to swim upstream, to cut against the grain, to stand out. It's hard to no longer be conformed to this world when there is so much of the world still conformed to us. Yet, this is the call of every true disciple -- to become like the Master. The highest honor of any parent is that their children want to grow up to be like them. Let us honor You, Lord, as we desire to be like You. "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when He is revealed, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is. And all who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure" (1 John 3.1-3). Give us courage to embrace the purifying process of discipleship. Teach us how to live a life that is dead to the world and alive to Christ. As Paul said, "I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the sharing of His sufferings by becoming like Him in His death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own" (Philippians 3.10-12). Lord, hear our prayer. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouaraged this day! Submission to Authority 5-31-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me be still so I can listen; help me be quiet so I can hear. ... "Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Ephesians 5.21). We are called to "be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work" (Titus 3.1-2). You strategically position us for Your service according to Your will and Your purposes in every season of our lives. You call us to take our position and give us the opportunity to answer Your call. Yet the priority of our service is not so much the position of our ministry, but the position of our heart. You are concerned in what we are doing, for You have called us to do it; but You are more concerned in who we are becoming. All that we do in our lives and our ministry to You is just a means for You to teach us Your ways and mature us into Your nature. You've positioned me in this season as a spiritual director, ordained under the United Methodist Church. Though You've called me to lead this prayer ministry You named "Messiah Ministries," You've called me to serve under the authority of my bishop, who oversees the ministers and ministries You have entrusted to his care. "Now this saying is sure: whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task," called to "take care of God's church" (1 Timothy 3.1-5). You are the head of the Church and when we submit in godly obedience to the authority of those You have called to shepherd our souls, we are submitting to You. "For a bishop" is "God's steward" (Titus 1.7). We need the blessing of accountability and the covering of Your spiritual authority that comes through obedience to Your spiritual order. Though it cuts against our independence and pride, it brings us to deeper levels of humility, which always leads to greater levels of anointing for ministry. Free us from criticism and complaining, and call us to intercession and prayer for those You have placed in authority in our lives. You have commanded us: "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls and will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with sighing--for that would be harmful to you" (Hebrews 13.17). Lord, help us learn and obey these principles of spiritual authority as we submit to Your authority through them, "out of reverence for Christ." In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouaraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, my family and I are in Corpus Christi, Texas this week for my Annual Conference with the Methodist Church to recieve our appointments from our Bishop for ministry. (I am under "special appointment" to "extension ministries"). We'd appreciate your prayers and I pray the Lord will strategically position each of you. God bless you! Manna in the Morning 5-30-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Come into my heart; come into my home. Let me start this day with You here alone. ... Holy Spirit, You are writing the words of a new song in my spirit as You lift my eyes to Jesus in prayer: Come into my heart; come into my home. Let me start this day, with You here alone. Before other thoughts may come; before other plans may form. Hold my hand in Yours, in the peace before the storm. Though the world has not changed; though wars will still be waged, Though problems have not ceased; though the enemy's enraged. I will not be moved; for I am here with You. And when I rise to go; You'll go there with me too. Thank You, Lord. As we turn our eyes to You, Your strength and peace fill our souls. You prepare our minds to face the struggles of our day as we prepare our hearts to seek Your face in prayer. Let us take time for You and let us thank You for taking time for us. These first few moments of the day with You are the most important moments we will spend each day. Like the manna from heaven sent to sustain Your people in each day's journey through the wilderness, let us eat of Your words and drink in Your presence. "Morning by morning they gathered it, as much as each needed" (Exodus 16.21). You know as much as we need, for You are the One we need. Thank You for giving Yourself to us each day. Let the River Flow 5-29-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let me listen, let me hear -- as I watch and wait for You. ... The Cumberland River winds through the valleys of these mountains. The river flows to the low places. So the River of Life flows to the low places -- to hearts that are humbled before You. You resist the proud, but give grace to the humble (James 4.6). Humility of heart draws Your presence like valleys draw the river and dry ground soaks in the rain. "For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the humble with victory" (Psalm 149.4). Teach us how to set aside our pride and humble our hearts in trusting surrender to You. Pride is the selfishness and self-focus that says, "I will do what I think I need to do in the power of my own strength, led by my own wisdom." Humility says, "Help me, Lord. Give my Your wisdom and Your strength. Apart from You, I can do nothing; but I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me." Pride says, "I'll call You when I need You." Humility says, "I need You every hour; I need You to be the very air I breathe." Lord, slay our pride and humble our hearts. Let the River flow. There will be life wherever this River flows (Ezekiel 47.9; Revelation 22.1-3). As the River flows to the low places, our humbled hearts will draw Your River and let it flow through us to others. "Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7.38). Flow through us each day, as we humble our hearts before You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Cumberland Falls 5-28-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Soak me in Your presence at the start of this new day. ... "Cumberland Falls" is the name of this place hidden away in the mountains of southern Kentucky at the gate of Tennessee. You've called me here this weekend to teach and minister Your healing love. You are welcoming us into Your presence, teaching us about the kingdom of God, and healing us as we have need (Luke 9.11). The name of this beautiful place of rest and retreat, bids us to "come" and "fall" before You. "Come to Me, all of you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" (Matthew 11.28-30). As we come to You, we fall before You. We lay down our burdens and lay down our walls. We let You come in to the deep places of our souls to touch us and heal us and hold us in the power of Your love. We are like the woman who suffered for twelve years and spent all she had to be healed, but then pressed through the crowds to come to You and fall before You: "She came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His clothes, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. Then Jesus said, 'Who touched Me? ... Someone touched Me; for I noticed that power had gone out from Me.' When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace' " (Luke 8.44-48). Lord Jesus, we come to You and fall before You. Teach us and touch us, heal us and hold us. Release the power of Your love to our spirits, souls, and bodies, that we may be made whole and restored to peace. Then send us forth to share the power of Your love and Your peace with the lives You touch through us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please join with us in prayer as we come to Jesus and fall before Him. He is the Healer of our souls. I pray He will touch you and heal you as He holds you in His arms of love. God bless you! The Bride of Christ 5-27-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. One day You will return in glory in the clouds; today You are returning in glory in our hearts. ... "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations" (Isaiah 61.10-11). Father, You have sent Your Holy Spirit to prepare the bride of Christ. Your Spirit is at work within us to heal our wounds and cleanse away our shame, to free us from everything that holds us back from our calling and destiny -- to be the holy bride prepared for the coming Christ. Just as all Your children are "sons of God," so are we all the "bride of Christ." Together, we are the body of Christ, filled with the Spirit of Christ, to be joined into eternal union with Christ -- one with Christ, one each other, and one in ministry to all the world (John 14.18-24). We welcome You to do all You need to do in us to prepare us for Your coming. We confess we have far to go, but nothing is impossible for You. "Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, in order to make her holy by washing her by the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to Himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind--yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish" (Ephesians 5.25-27). Though we will not know the day or hour of Your return, we will know the sign of the season (1 Thessalonians 5.1-11). And this will be the sign -- there will be a holy bride on earth to receive her holy Christ (Revelation 19.7-8). Come, Holy Spirit; prepare the holy bride. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please cover us in prayer as I lead a weekend retreat at Cumberland Falls, Ky with Aglow International on healing and deliverance to prepare the bride of Christ. The Blessing of the Battles 5-26-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I begin this day with my eyes on You. ... "I sought the Lord and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Look to Him and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them" (Psalm 34.4-7). You are always listening, always ready, always available. You see our struggles and You engage in our battles, fighting for us in ways we don't see. "When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all" (Psalm 34.17-19). In the battles of a broken and fallen world, we are powerless apart from You. Yet we are not apart from You and we do not wage war on our own. You encourage us and fight for us, as You lead us through every battle. "The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a Warrior Who gives victory" (Zephaniah 3.17). As we turn our eyes to You, we are always victorious -- no matter the afflictions and persecutions we endure. As we trust in You to bring us through, even the battles become blessings. Our battle scars become badges of honor. Our healed wounds become honed weapons as we rise to fight in the battles for others. Let us not fear the fight, but follow on in faith. "It is through many persecutions that we must enter the Kingdom of God" (Acts 14.22). And we enter the Kingdom every day as we put our trust in the King of the kingdom. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, let us pray for one another and fight for one another in prayer as we face the battles together of a broken and fallen world. The battle is already won in Christ. God bless you! Words of Life 5-25-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Word of Life. Let Your words rise up in my soul and burn like a fire until they are released as praise to Your name. ... "And the Word became flesh and lived among us" (John 1.14). Now that Your Spirit lives within us, Your Word lives within us as well (John 14.15-17). You have the words of life because You are the Word of Life. By the mystery of faith and in the wisdom of God, You have entrusted Your words to us. We have the power of life and death in the words we speak (Proverbs 18.21). Let us use this power You have entrusted to us to speak blessings and not curses, life and not death (James 3.5-10). Sanctify our tongues to proclaim Your praises and prepare Your people. Let the Word of Life go forth from Spirit-filled hearts, filtered through the cross of Christ, purified through the flame of the Holy Spirit. "Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips" (Psalm 141.3). Let Your cross be our guard; let Your flame be our door. Let our words be Your words -- words of life spoken by the Word of Life, living in us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Extraordinary Witnesses 5-24-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let the light of Your glory dawn in my heart this new day. "For it is the God Who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' Who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 4.6). ... Let us be Your witnesses through every circumstance -- filled with joy in times of triumph and celebration, patient and persistent in times of strain -- always hoping, always trusting, always faithfully pressing on in the calling of our destiny in Your glory. Let us represent Your nature in all seasons to all people. "So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5.20). "But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies" (2 Corinthians 4.7-10). Lord, let Your light shine through us. Let our eyes be fixed on You, though let us be aware that others are watching how we live in times of joy and of sorrow, in times of abundance and in times of famine. Let faithfulness to You be a witness to the world around us of Your faithfulness to us. This extraordinary power to be Your extraordinary witnesses belongs to You and does not come from us. Healing Peace 5-23-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I embrace Your presence as You draw me in to the holy place of prayer. Now I watch and wait for the leading of Your Spirit. ... "They have treated the wound of My people carelessly, saying, 'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace" (Jeremiah 8.11). Lord, forgive us when we try to cover up our wounds and refuse to see the wounds of one another. Forgive us when we let our pronouncements of prosperity and confessions of faith veil our brokenness and hide our pain. You are the God Who "heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147.3). But our pride causes us to deny our brokenness and our insecurities cause us to hide our wounds. Sometimes we say there is peace with our lips when our minds know there is stress; we say there is joy with our smiles when our hearts know there is sadness. Pull back the cloak of pride and strip away the facade of deception, that we may honestly open our wounds to You and receive the peace that comes with Your healing touch. But how can we be healed unless we admit we are broken? How can we be freed unless we acknowledge we are bound? You give grace to the humble, but resist the proud (James 4.6). As we humble ourselves before You in honesty and open our wounds to You in truth, You are like the good Samaritan who finds us and heals us and restores us. You are like the good shepherd who sees the needs and treats the wounds of his sheep with honesty and with love. "For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, says the Lord" (Jeremiah 30.17). By the wounds that You endured for us, we are healed, as we admit them and release them to You (1 Peter 2.24). As You give us courage to admit our own wounds, give us compassion to see the wounds of one another, that we may open them all before You. Then we will receive Your healing touch; then we will know Your healing peace. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please pray for our the healing prayer retreat sponsored by Aglow I will be leading at Cumberland Falls next weekend. Be Still 5-22-05

Morning by Morning, Sunday 5-22-05 -- Be Still Good morning, Lord Jesus. For these first few moments each morning, the world can wait. Let me think of nothing but You and the thoughts You bring to my mind. ... "Times of refreshing" come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3.20). Teach us how to be still in Your presence, to quiet our souls before You. Show us how to let Your peace flow over us like a warm shower, as we let tension and stress swirl down the drain. Wash over us on this day of rest as we hear and heed Your gentle call: "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46.10). Yes, Lord. ... In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, thank you for your prayers for our healing prayer retreat on Saturday. The Lord moved powerfully and gently through inner healing -- healing from the inside out -- to free us from the wounds and burdens of the past to embrace the destiny of our future. Experience and Wisdom 5-20-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Arise within my soul and lead me along Your paths. ... As we come to the end of another week of trying to live out our faith in the midst of a faithless world, it's good to stop and reflect. Convict us where we have sinned, that we may receive Your forgiveness and grace for change. Heal us where we have been wounded, that we may be encouraged and restored, even stronger than before. Free us where we have become bound by offense or entangled by pride, that we may be released from all that would hold us back from fulfilling our calling and destiny in You. Let us be wise enough to learn from our mistakes and humble enough to know we need to. As my friend Ginger said at prayer this week, "Experience is when we learn from our own mistakes; wisdom is when we learn from the mistakes of others." That's good. Redeem the experiences of our lives to teach us Your ways, that we may grow in Your wisdom. "It is good for me that I was humbled, so that I might learn Your statutes. The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces" (Psalm 119.71-72). Let the law of Your ways become the leading of our hearts. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, thank you for your prayers yesterday. The teaching on prayer ministry was very well recieved and we won our hearing in court. If you are in the area, please Come to Fountain this Saturday night for our monthly, citywide gathering for prayer, praise, and healing worship at 7pm in the chapel at Centenary in Lexington. Light of the World 5-19-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are both the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judah. You convict me of sin as my Judge, yet You forgive me of all sin as my Savior. You desire my love, while You require my obedience. You are the Son of God, yet You are also our Father God and the Holy Spirit of God, for You are One God. You are complete and whole and perfect in every dimension and in every way. You are like a skillfully cut diamond with many different facets fashioned by a master craftsman to reveal the light and fire of Your glory, yet You have no maker and there are no limits to the depths of Your nature. I worship You in humility and praise before You, in every dimension of Your Being. ... Today I will begin this day as an advocate in a court of law and finish as a minister of healing prayer. Yet I will try to seek the leading and wisdom and grace of Your Holy Spirit in all that I do, because I am to be the same person in all arenas of my life. Over twelve years ago, You called me out of the full time practice of law into the full time practice of ministry, yet there are still times when I find myself entering a world that it seemed I was leaving behind. But that's the point, isn't it, Lord? You have not called us to be Your witnesses with our lives being lived out in isolation from the world, but here in our everyday lives in the midst of the world. We are to be the same disciples of Christ living out the principles of the Kingdom of God in the church and in the marketplace, at home and away, when we are surrounded by crowds and when no one else is around -- even in the courtroom as much as in the prayer closet. You are the same, yesterday, today and forever; in this sense, so should we be. You prayed this prayer for us just before You returned to our Father in heaven: "And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father protect them in Your name that You have given Me, so that they may be one, as We are One.... I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but I ask You to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You have sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world" (John 17.11-18). Let us do all we do to Your glory, because You have called us to be who we are, all to Your glory. No matter where we are, what we are doing, or who we are with, give us grace to be Your faithful disciples in all things. In this way, we will fulfill our calling and fulfill Your prophecy of Your church in the power of Your Spirit: "You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5.14). We are the light of the world to the extent that we allow Your light to shine through us, as we live our lives in the midst of the world. Shine through us this day and every day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I would appreciate your prayers for me as a prayer leader tonight as I teach prayer ministry with the First Methodist Church in Lexington, and your prayer for me today as an advocate for my client in court with the law firm of Troutman & Hays. Streams in the Desert 5-17-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Good Shepherd and Your sheep know Your voice. Help me know You more personally and hear You more clearly every day, as I listen for the leading of Your Spirit. ... You are bringing to mind the photograph my friend Pam gave me for my office that speaks of the hope You bring through healing prayer ministry. It shows the dry sands of Egypt at the edge of the Red Sea. But there in the midst of the desert is a waterspout, where bright yellow flowers have blossomed into life. "The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing.... For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water..." (Isaiah 35.1-7). You love to bring new life out of the dry places of our souls. You love to splash the color of hope across the barren canvas of despair. We need Your living waters that renew our spirits and heal our souls. We need to drink deeply from Your streams that are ever-flowing beneath the surface of our lives. Then others will be drawn to the Life they see living in us. You are the Waters that break forth in the wilderness. You are our Life in the midst of the desert. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I will be leading a Healing Prayer Retreat in Aurora, Indiana this Saturday, 5-21 from 9-5 at First Evangelical UCC with Rev. The World has Changed 5-16-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I turn my thoughts toward You, as I wait and listen for the leading of Your Spirit to begin this new day. ... From the rising of the sun in the east to the setting of the sun in the west, yesterday we gathered together in the unity of the Holy Spirit to pray as one body throughout the earth. The Global Day of Prayer was the largest prayer meeting in history, as we prayed the same prayers and the prayers of our hearts in the languages of the world and in the language of the Spirit. As You led, we prayed in humility and with boldness, we prayed confession and repentance, we prayed fervently and passionately, with intensity and with intimacy. We worshiped You and praised You and welcomed You into our hearts and into our lands. Your glory covered the earth as the waters cover the sea (Habakkuk 2.14). Because You are answering the prayers You have placed on our hearts, heaven and earth were moved by the power of prayer. The world changed yesterday. It is different this morning than yesterday morning because prayer changes things. We do not know all that has happened, but we will begin to see the fruit of Your answers to our prayers. "And this is the boldness we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of Him" (1 John 5.14-15). We have prayed the prayers You placed on our hearts, that Your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Thank You for the honor and the blessing of being vessels of Your will as You released Your power through our prayers. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Power of Pentecost 5-15-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You and the Father and the Spirit are One. By Your grace, You come to live in our hearts and release the power of Your love. Come live in me as I welcome You into my heart afresh this day. ... Today is the Sunday we celebrate Pentecost -- fifty days after the celebration of Passover. You prepared Your first disciples for this day of the coming of the Spirit of God in power by calling them together with expectant hearts: "While staying with them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. 'This,' He said, 'is what you have heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now' " (Acts 1.4-5). You explained that the power of God to live our lives as Your witnesses in this world is released through the coming of the Holy Spirit: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1.8). In anticipation and faith, they gathered together in one accord, "constantly devoting themselves to prayer," as they were watching and waiting for the coming of Your Spirit in power (Acts 1.14). "When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability" (Acts 2.1-4). Today we gather in one accord from every tongue and tribe and nation throughout the earth on this Pentecost Sunday set apart as a Global Day of Prayer. Though we are many and though we are physically in different places throughout the earth, we are one in the Spirit and one in the Lord, as we gather together in the place of prayer. Come Holy Spirit, like a mighty rushing wind, and fill the house of our hearts with the fire of Your living presence. Set us ablaze with a passion for You and a passion to be Your witnesses throughout the earth. Let our tongues proclaim Your praise in the spiritual language of love. As Charles Wesley wrote of this day of passionate praise and holy fire, "O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of His grace!" We triumph in Your grace this day as thousands upon thousands of tongues sing Your praise throughout the earth. Let Your Spirit come as our spirits pray; let Your fire fall as our praises rise; let our hearts swell as You fill us with Your love; let Your power be released as You send us forth. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, let's join together today for the Global Day of Prayer throughout the earth. In Lexington, we will come together in the unity of the body of Christ at Heritage Hall downtown from 3-5 pm. God bless you in your celebration of prayer today! "To the Whole World!" 5-14-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Open the eyes of my heart to seek You and behold You in deeper levels of intimacy with You every day. ... Today is Elijah's birthday. He's my fourth child and youngest son, turning three today. When he was a baby in our arms, someone said to us in prayer ministry that he would be prophesy by the time he turned three. And so he has. As I was preparing to lead the group from our church in prayer for the National Day of Prayer last week, Elijah said, "I will preach, then I will pray." I asked him what he would preach about and he said, "for the Lord ... to the whole world." He kept smiling and declaring over and over "to the whole world!" as he lifted his little hand straight up in the air with great authority. When it came time to pray, there he was at my knee, saying, "I'm ready to pray, Daddy." His little voice rang out in prayer over the microphone. I'm sure the angels of heaven who do the bidding of the Lord were dispatched to carry out the words released through a son of the King. So "the little prophet" -- as one of my pastors calls him -- got to preach and pray on the National Day of Prayer by the time he turned three. I have no doubt he won't stop until he shares his heart to the whole world! "... and a little child shall lead them" (Isaiah 11.6). Lord, restore us to the place of simple trust and childlike faith. Awaken our hearts to preach Your love and pray Your power to the whole world, one soul at a time. As we grow in wisdom and stature with each passing year, let us never lose the blessing of a simple faith and a pure heart that insists on sharing Your love with everyone around. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please join with those praying around the world for the Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday, May 15th. In Lexington, Kentucky we will gather in Heritage Hall next to Rupp Arena from 3 to 5 pm in Ballrooms 1-3 on the Vine Street level. Please come join us and pray with us if you can't. God bless you! Saturate Us 6-13-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Draw me near into the depths of Your presence in these first moments of the morning. I choose to begin this day with You. ... Saturate us with Your Spirit, Lord. Peter was so saturated with the living presence of Your Holy Spirit that even the touch of his shadow brought healing and deliverance (Acts 5.12-16). You are the healer and the deliverer; You have all power in heaven and earth. Yet, You choose to live in our hearts by the presence of Your Sprit. You desire to abide in us and for us to abide in You so intimately that we become one -- as close as the created can become one with our Creator. Let our very being exude Your presence and power because of the intimacy of our hearts with Yours. When the world sees Your nature and Your power exuding from Your people, it will be said again in our day what was said in Peter's day: "Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women" (Acts 5.14). Catching our Breath 5-12-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Steady my heart as I take time to breathe in Your Spirit. ... The journey of our lives is more of an endurance race than a sprint. It's more like a cross-country run than lapping around the track. There are times along the course when we need to slow down the pace a little to catch our breath. Sometimes our heart needs to stop racing, but not throbbing. An image comes to mind of a long distance, cross-country runner who needs to catch his breath and is tempted to stop or sit down awhile. But instead he keeps walking rather than just standing or sitting or laying down. He keeps moving, just not at the same pace. When he is rested, he takes off again. Even when we pull back for a season to catch our breath, we are not to stop completely, but keep moving forward. We may spend a few days not talking with people as much, but we should not stop talking with You. As we slow down to walk for a while, the deep breaths help steady our hearts again and clear our thoughts to remind us of why we are running the race. "For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to You" (Psalm 26.3). We may slow down the pace a little for a time, but we should not take ourselves out of the race. To stop completely will take much more energy to get going again, but to slow down and walk awhile refreshes us as we catch our breath and renew our focus. You see the end from the beginning of our course, and You know best how each one of us should run our race. Let us run the race so as to win the prize (1 Corinthians 9.24). You are the prize. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! You Restore My Soul 5-11-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I entrust this day to You. ... "And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone..." (Matthew 14.23). Lord, You have created us for relationship with You and with one another, to minister to You and to minister to one another. There is great joy in finding and fulfilling our calling in Your kingdom. But sometimes we need to pull away from the crowds and go to the mountain of Your presence alone in prayer. Sometimes we need to rest and just relax. It's not being lazy or callous to the needs of others. Sometimes You make us to lie down in green pastures and lead us beside the still waters for awhile, as You restore our soul (Psalm 23.1-3). Whether we're on retreat in the mountains or in our prayer chair in the corner of the room, we can hear Your call to come away with You for awhile. Here we are refreshed and renewed in Your presence. In this place of rest in You, "surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23.6). In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I'd appreciate your prayers for rest in my soul for these few days away in the mountains of North Carolina for retreat and relationship with our Fellowship of Ministries. And I pray for seasons of refreshing and rest for each of you.
