“No Greater Love” -- Honoring the Courageous Teachers Who Laid Down Their Lives in Uvalde - May 26, 2022

Morning by Morning, May 26 - “No Greater Love” -- Honoring the Courageous Teachers Who Laid Down Their Lives in Uvalde

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are always with us (Matthew 28:20), never leaving us nor forsaking us (Hebrews 13:5). Thank You for being with me now and through all I’ll encounter along my journey of life in You today. ...

As the details begin to emerge from the horrific, senseless slaughter of the elementary children in Uvalde, I thank You for the expressions of love and hope and community-wide prayer that are also emerging among the people You called and positioned as Your light in the midst of the darkness (Isaiah 60:1-3; Philippians 2:15). I was moved to tears to read of the courage of two elementary school teachers who courageously stood in front of their young fourth grade students in the face of the killer. With brave hearts, they laid down their lives for sake of the children entrusted to them. And this is love. As You said, there is none greater:

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13 NLT).

You laid down Your life for us, that with Your Spirit of Your love in our hearts, we can have the courage and bravery to lay down our lives for one another (v. 12). This morning, I honor those brave teachers of Uvalde, Texas -- Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia. And no doubt we will hear more stories of courage and bravery in the face of this evil in the days to come.

I join with all those around the world who grieve and mourn the unbearable sadness of this tragedy. And at the same time, I also pray that in the freedom to grieve and to express the anger and outrage at the evil darkness at work to “steal and kill and destroy” in our world, Your Spirit will turn grieving, angry, and hurting hearts to You, to the One who is the Source of life and love, of courage and bravery (John 10:10).

You’re the only One who can heal and restore and redeem this evil into good (Romans 8:28; Acts 3:19-21). You’re the only One who can empower us to “overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). As we turn to You and allow You to do that in us and through us, in Your way and in Your time -- the “sorrow and sighing” of all we endure in this broken and fallen world “shall flee away” (Isaiah 35:10). And in the end, all will know the reality of Your profound Truth:

“Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8 NKJV).

Love conquers all, because “God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them” (1 John 4:16). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with the Spirit of the One who laid down His life for you in love, that you may entrust your life to Him and be ready to lay it down in love for one another, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Grieving for the Children, Turning to the Comforter - May 25, 2022

Morning by Morning, May 25 - Grieving for the Children, Turning to the Comforter

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart, as I begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit. ...

The families and friends, the classmates and co-workers, in the community of the little town of Uvalde, not too far down the road from my community, are still heavy on my heart this morning. I can’t fully imagine their shock and grief as the facts settle into their minds and emotions that a young man went into their elementary school and intentionally took aim to shoot and kill young children and their teacher.

As I fumble for words for prayer, the slaughter of the innocents in the days Herod murdered the children of Bethlehem seeking to silence the voice and shut down the destiny of the Messiah of Israel comes to my heart:

“Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more’”
(Matthew 2:16-18).

Violence and evil are nothing new in our broken and fallen world. And neither is our desperate need for our Savior and Comforter. When we allow You to come into our crises and allow Your love to draw out our grief, even in the freedom You give us to fully express our outrage at the cruelty of wicked choices made -- whether by Herod in Israel or a deranged young killer in Texas, evil does not have to have the last word and grief does not have to define the rest of our lives. In Your time and in Your way, even all the “weeping and loud lamentation,” even hearts that “refuse to be comforted” in the time of shock and disbelief at the tragedy, can draw us to You, to the only One who can truly comfort and truly heal.

That’s my prayer for the community of Uvalde, as well as for the communities and countries around our world enduring the cruelty of evil choices made in our broken and fallen world in desperate need of a Savior. And You are our Savior. You are the One who has overcome and empowers us to ultimately overcome all that would “steal and kill and destroy” in our lives (John 10:10).

As You said to Your disciples to prepare their hearts for the tragedies and evil of the world they would endure long ago, You continue to speak to us today: “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). I do pray for that peace that only You can give for all who are grieving beyond comfort today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you allow the One is our Savior and Comforter to embrace you and bring you through every tragedy and crises you may endure, joining in prayer for those going through it now, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

“Relentless Remnant” - May 24, 2022

Morning by Morning, May 24 - “Relentless Remnant”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of kings and Lord of lords, come rule and regain in my heart and life today. ...

As I listen for the leading of Your Spirit and ponder Your Word in my heart, I hear a cry in my heart rising up in my prayer: Lord, I want to be found faithful to You. I want to walk in Your Light, even as the darkness of this world closes in. I want to be filled with faith and hope and love, despite the challenges we face and the testing we endure on our journey through this broken and fallen world, where You are making us more like You each day. (Romans 8:29). I want to be part of Your relentless remnant, who don’t give in, who don’t back off, but who press in for the fullness of all You say we are and all You’ve created us to be, with our eyes fixed on You and our hope resting in You.

As I hear these words “relentless remnant” in heart’s cry just now, Your Word comes to mind:

“I ask, then, has God rejected His people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? ‘Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have demolished Your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.’ But what is the divine reply to him? ‘I have kept for Myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ So, too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace” (Romans 11:1-6).

Lord, You don’t back off of Your calling to me. Give me grace to not back off of my commitment to You. “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29). Give me grace to keep trusting and believing, with a sure and confident hope in You and all that You say I am and have for me to honor You with my life (Romans 11:20).

According to the warnings of Your Word, there will come a day when “many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:10-13). “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will renounce the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared with a hot iron” (1 Timothy 4:1-2). “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths” (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

Your Word warns us, “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end” (Hebrews 3:12-14). “You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability” (2 Peter 3:17).

Lord, give me Your grace that my love will not grow cold, but will burn with increasing passion for You, with unwavering commitment to You. Give me grace that I would never surrender and never retreat before the enemies of the cross or the lawless darkness of this world. Give me grace to “be found faithful” to the end (1 Corinthians 4:2), to “fight the good fight of the faith (and) take hold of the eternal life to which (I have been) called” (1 Timothy 6:12).

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him” (James 1:12). By the power of Your grace at work in every heart turned to You, pressing in to You, “we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls” (Hebrews 10:39).

Yes, Lord. Give me grace to be a part of Your “relentless remnant.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be found faithful in the Lord, part of His "relentless remnant" in the earth by the power of His grace at work within you and shining through you in the midst of the darkness and lawlessness of our world, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Power Words - May 18, 2022

Morning by Morning, May 18 - Power Words

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart to lead me and guide me in Your steps today (1 Peter 2:21). ...

“But those who prophesy speak to other people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation” (1 Corinthians 14:3). “He who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort” (NKJV).

Your Word says we are to “Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts and especially that (we) may prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:1). To “prophesy” is to listen for Your heart and speak Your words to build up, to encourage, to comfort, as Your Spirit leads.

Lord, draw me nearer to Your heart, so that my heart beats with Yours. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so that my spirit abides in communion with Your Spirit. Open my spiritual ears to be more attentive to Your voice. Open my spiritual eyes to see more clearly what You see.

As I seek to follow in Your steps on my journey today wherever You lead, let my thoughts, my desires, my words, my actions be in alignment with Yours. And whenever You give me words to speak from Your heart into the hearts of those I encounter along the way, give me faith and courage to speak Your words full of Spirit and Life as You lead. That’s one of the ways You desire to express Your hope and Your love through my life and through the lives of those who are called by Your name, just as Your Spirit commends us and Your Word commands us:

“Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:10-11).

So let my words be Your words today, whenever I speak and whenever I serve, with the words and the strength that You supply, that You “may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.” Let my words be power words, releasing Your power to build up and encourage and comfort, as You receive “the glory and the power” through my life and through Your people “forever and ever. Amen.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may your words be filled with power of the Lord's love to buildup and encourage and comfort with His words of Spirit and Life through you, as His Spirit leads today and every day, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!
