"In His Steps" 4-6-06

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I turn my eyes of my heart to You, as I watch and wait for the leading of Your Spirit in the embrace of my Father. ... As Josiah is a type of apostolic leader under the Old Testament, so Paul is a type of apostolic leader under the New Testament. One of the marks of a true leader is one who can lead through controversy -- pressing through it rather than avoiding it, overcoming it rather than being overwhelmed by it, growing because of it rather than being embittered by it. Even the church at Corinth that Paul birthed and fathered challenged his leadership when he challenged their ways. Yet in affirming his authority of leadership, he didn't point to his position or his educational degrees; he pointed to Your grace in his life to lead and persevere through adversity and affliction: "We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamites, beating, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, yet true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see -- we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything" (2 Corinthians 6:3-10). As disciples of Christ, we are called to lead by following You. As Isaiah prophesied of You eight hundred years before You would come as the suffering servant of God, "He is despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief," but at the same time, "the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand" (Isaiah 53:3, 10). Give me courage to follow You in order to lead others to You, to endure every affliction and hardship with purity and patience in order for You to work into my soul the holiness of spirit and genuine love You desire from me. "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps" (1 Peter 2:21). In Jesus' name I pray Amen.
