Morning by Morning, July 13 - “Baptize (Us) with the Holy Spirit and Fire!”
Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today. ...
“As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John (the Baptist), whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but One who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His granary; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.’ So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people” (Luke 3:15-18).
Lord Jesus, You’re the “One who is more powerful.” You’re the One who comes to “baptize (us) with the Holy Spirit and fire.” You’re the One who winnows out the wheat from the chaff in our souls to “burn with unquenchable fire” as that’s within us that’s not yet like You.
This is “good news” for all who have ears to hear. This is good news for all who are “filled with expectation.”
You’re the One who is our “Messiah,” our Christ, our anointed One who saves our spirits and sanctifies our souls, as You purify us in the Refiner’s Fire of Your Holy Spirit. That same Fire who purifies us is the same Fire who empowers us with authority in Your name to be witnesses of Your glory and good news everywhere You send us in our world -- whether across the street or to the ends of the earth.
Just as You said to Your first disciples at the end of Your first coming, You’re still speaking to us in every generation since then and to all of us who are Your disciples today on the verge of Your second coming:
“After His suffering He presented Himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While stayingwith them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. ‘This,’ He said, ‘is what you have heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.... You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth’” (Acts 1:3-8).
Holy Spirit come! Holy Fire fall! Baptize me, saturate me, immerse me, fill me and consume me! Burn out of me everything in me that’s not yet like Jesus. Set me ablaze with a passion for You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- and an anointing of Your fire and power to speak out and live out Your good news everywhere You send me as Your witness today and every day! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
