Morning by Morning, August 23 - Rumors of War and Rumblings of Love
Good morning, Lord Jesus. Savior of my soul, Hope of the world, I look to You to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...
Saturday morning I saw a photo of a soldier giving a drink of water to a little Afghan boy at the airport as his family anxiously waited to flee Kabul. I posted it to a few of my prayer groups, with a quote of Your Words about giving a cool cup of water to one of these little ones from Matthew 10:42 and was amazed how quickly it spread.
We’re hungry for hope. We’re longing for some signs of light and life in the midst of the confusion, chaos, and darkness. And that won’t be changing, between this day and the day You come again to set things right and redeem all things:
“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:6-14).
A soldier giving a cup of cool water to a child or taking a stand to help a family escape a nightmare of terror is preaching this gospel of the kingdom. Getting down on our knees in prayer or taking the hand of someone struggling with fear or crying out in faith with words of spiritual warfare or passion for spiritual revival through the darkness of persecution are all preaching this gospel of the kingdom.
So give us grace to endure to end. Give us courage in the crisis and confidence in Christ to persevere until we see Your kingdom prevail.
Let us not be troubled even though these are such troubling times. Let us now be overwhelmed by tribulation even though tribulation is upon us. But like that soldier and the heart of all he represents, let us “shine as lights in a dark world” (Philippians 2:15).
Yes, there are rumors of war. But there are also rumblings of love at the same time.
One day “the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). One day “the kingdoms of this world (will) have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever” (Revelation 11:15). But every day between this day that day to come, we’re in a war and we’ll hear rumors of war. And we’ll keep fighting, by the power of Your grace, with “the weapons of our warfare (that) are not merely human, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).
These are weapons of kindness, compassion, and love; weapons of courage, prayer, and faith; weapons of the Word of God prayed and proclaimed by the power of the Spirit of God; weapons of shining like lights in the midst of the darkness in the unexpected moments we have and the opportunities we take to live out this gospel of the kingdom in the midst of the kingdoms of this world whenever we can. “And then the end will come.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
