Morning by Morning, August 24 - “Just Say the Word” to Bring Order Our of Our Chaos
Good morning, Lord Jesus. My Father and Friend, my Savior and Shepherd, I surrender my heart and my life completely to You. ...
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light” (Genesis 1:1-3).
Just as Your Spirit hovered over the deep, dark places at the beginning, You still do.
Not “hovering” in the sense of indifferently watching, but in the sense of determined to speak light into the darkness, to bring order out of the chaos, to form good out of what was empty and helpless apart from You.
Come, Holy Spirit of God. Come hover over the troubled waters of our world. Speak light into our darkness. Bring order out of our chaos.
We desperately need You. And with every passing day, every bewildering circumstance we find ourselves in, every hopeless situation that we’re finding is fully out of our control, we’re finding just how desperately we need You alone to speak Your word into our world.
But just as the centurion soldier You commended for having “such great faith” turned to You in his time of desperate need for one under his care, saying, “Just say the word, and my servant will be healed,” we turn to You to “Just say the word” into our world (Matthew 8:5-10). It’s Your word that will bring light out of the darkness, order out of the chaos, and hope out of the helplessness.
That’s humility -- to willingly choose to be desperately dependent upon You alone. And when we humble ourselves in Your sight, that’s when You can lift us up (James 4:10). You oppose the proud, but give grace to the humble (James 4:6). And we’re in desperate need of Your grace -- here in our world and right here in our hearts.
So come hover over us today. Come speak into us today. Come give us the grace of “such great faith” that trusts You to “Just say the word” and set things right in us and in everything that’s caught up in the chaos of our world today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
