Morning by Morning, January 24 - “Above Your Fellows” - Jesus Above All
Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today -- for as You are, so are we to be (1 John 4:17). ...
As I listen and wait for the leading of Your Spirit -- to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit -- I hear in my heart these words from the Messianic Psalm 45, prophetically written of You nearly 1500 years before You were conceived by the Holy Spirit in human form as our Messiah and Savior of all. It speaks of how You were anointed with “the oil of joy above Your fellows.” I’ve been pondering these words ever since my deep encounter with You a few nights ago:
“My heart overflows with a good theme;
I address my verses to the King;
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
You are fairer than the sons of men;
Grace is poured upon Your lips;
Therefore God has blessed You forever.
Gird Your sword on Your thigh, O Mighty One,
In Your splendor and Your majesty!
And in Your majesty ride on victoriously,
For the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness;
Let Your right hand teach You awesome things.
Your arrows are sharp;
The peoples fall under You;
Your arrows are in the heart of the King’s enemies.
Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of joy above Your fellows.
All Your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
Out of ivory palaces stringed instruments have made You glad.
Kings’ daughters are among Your noble ladies;
At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir”
(Palm 45:1-9 NASB1995 emphasis added).
Lord Jesus -- our King of kings and Lord of lords, our Savior and Messiah, the Anointed One of God -- You stand above all. You stand above all Your fellows. And You are anointed with “the oil of joy above Your fellows” (v. 7).
Even as You walked this earth on Your way to the cross to die as the Sacrifice of God on our behalf -- in all seriousness of the gravity of all You would endure before You would overcome -- You were still filled with joy in Your heart, secure in Your identity and fulfilling Your destiny:
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12:1-3).
As we look to You, “fixing our eyes on (You),” allow You to anoint us with “the oil of joy,” despite all we have endured and are enduring and will yet endure, we will overcome in You. You release Your grace -- like a grace package perfectly suited to each one of us -- for each of us to overcome.
And You give us grace by Your Spirit to not merely overcome as if just getting by, just surviving, just barely making it through, but to overcome with joy in our hearts and peace in our spirits, as we confidently trust in You and all You have done for us and continue to do for us.
Because Your stand “above all Your fellows,” anointed with the oil of joy “above all Your fellows,” You lift us up into that very place by Your Spirit, as we overcome in You because You overcome in us. As Your Word promises:
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:4-7).
Thank You for the grace to overcome with joy all I endure. Thank You for all You endured for me for the sake of the joy that was set before You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

My friend, may you be anointed and filled with the joy as the joy of Jesus overflows in your life with His grace to overcome all you endure, just like Him, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!
