Morning by Morning, October 14 - "Do Not Neglect the Gift"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me by the heart into Your will for my life today.  ...

"Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress" (1 Timothy 4:14-15).

Father, You've given me the gift of Your Holy Spirit. And at the same time, along with each of Your children, You've given me spiritual gifts to express Your heart and dimensions of Your nature through my life as Your son (1 Corinthians 12:7).

Stir up Your gifts within me; fan them into flame, as You "rekindle the gift of God that is within (me)" (2 Timothy 1:6). Let them flow out of a secure and confident identity in You as a child of God, called by God and gifted by God, with Your good gifts bearing Your good fruit through my life for the glory of Your good name (John 15:5). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  may our great God stir up and fan into flame His good gifts to display the glory of His name through your life today. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 10 - Living Hope

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today.  ...

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for (us), who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this (we) rejoice, even if now for a little while (we) have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of (our) faith -- being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed" (1 Peter 1:3-7).

Our hope is alive. It's a living hope, tested by fire, battered by trials, but also "protected by God through faith." And though it is perishable, even extinguishable, it is grounded in truth and undergirded in the experiences that confirm our God is good and our God is for us and our God is with us though whatever we endure in the challenges of this world.

Our hope is not set on circumstances; our hope is set on You. "For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe" (1 Timothy 4:10). You are a living God who empowers us and encourages us every day, through every challenge, with a living hope. And this living hope is built on nothing less than You alone. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  I pray you are empowered and encouraged in your hope in Christ today as you overcome every challenge through your faith in our good God who is always with you and always for you. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 9 - True Heart, Forgiven and Free

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speak to my heart Your words of spirit and life.  ...

"And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, 'This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord:  I will put My laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,' He also adds, 'I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.' Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin" (Hebrews 10:15-18).

Thank You, Lord, that these are the days You have forgiven me of my sins "by the blood of Jesus" (v. 10:19). These are the days You've put Your ways in my heart and You've written Your will on my mind. This is "the new and living way" You set before me each day to embrace by the power of Your grace and live in newness of life (v. 10:20).

Because of all You've done for me, all out of Your love for me, I can live this day "with a true heart in full assurance of faith" (v. 10:22). And I can "hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who has promised is faithful" (v. 10:23).

To reject all You've done for me and continue to do for me, to choose to live under the shadow of my past failures and regrets instead of the freedom of Your forgiveness would be the worst sin of all and an arrogant affront to the power of the cross. Breaking Your heart, I would be one of "those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which (we) were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace" (v. 10:29).

So I will not reject Your gift of grace. I will not condemn myself as if the blood of Jesus were not powerful enough to cleanse every one of my sins and regrets. Instead I will hold fast to the confession of my hope in the power of Your grace:  "If we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). By the power of Your grace, I will live this day in the freedom of Your forgiveness, cleansed by the blood of Jesus from all unrighteousness, secure in my identity as the child of God that I am. This is a true heart, living in full assurance of faith. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  I pray you will live this day in the fullness and freedom of God's forgiveness, with a true heart wholly given to Him, cleansed by His blood and filled with His Spirit.
Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 8 - The Fast the Lord Chooses

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I entrust my life and this day into Your hands, O Lord my God -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  ...

"Is not this the fast that I choose:  to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and He will say, Here I am" (Isaiah 58:6-9).

This fast that You choose is a fast from my flesh, a fast from selfishness and self-centeredness. It's a fast that frees me from the tyranny of my self and turns my heart to the things on Your heart.

Give me Your heart, Lord. Open my eyes to see the needs of those around me and fill my spirit with the power to do something about it. Give me time and passion for people in the ways that I can make a difference. Let me be part of the move of Your Spirit in my city and spheres of influence to rebuild the "ancient ruins," to "raise up the foundations of many generations" and "be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets" (v. 58:12).

This fast is not about ancient rituals or even faithfully executing spiritual disciplines. This fast is about putting You first, as Your Spirit overcomes my flesh so You can change the world around me through my life. This is the fast You choose. So by the power of the grace of God at work within me, let this be the fast I choose. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  I pray the Holy Spirit gives you eyes to see the needs of the world around you and the power to do something about it in your spheres of influence to day.  Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 7 - "Boldly Belonging"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I come to the Father through Jesus the Son and give You the glory, great things You have done. Holy Spirit of God, come do great things in my heart and through my life in the power of Your love today. ...
As I wait for Your leading, I hear in my heart, "Boldly belonging."  ...
What are You speaking to me this morning, Lord?  ...

As I watch and wait, it seems I hear You say, "My son, you belong with Me. You are forgiven for your sins and loved as you are. Don't hold back from coming to Me, don't push back from Me coming to you. Boldly embrace Me, because I boldly embrace you."

Yes, Lord. Thank You, Lord! Free me to live more boldly in the embrace of Your love, all by the power of Your grace. Though in my heart, I think I feel pretty free, help me be freer still. Though in my heart, I think I feel pretty bold, help me be bolder still -- boldly belonging to You.

"For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:15-16 NKJV).

It's through the power of the blood of Jesus, that You're always inviting me and always welcoming me to come boldly before Your throne of grace. That's where I belong, because You're the One to whom I belong -- boldly belonging to You. "We have boldness and access with confidence through faith in (You)" (Ephesians 3:12 NKJV). Thank You, Jesus! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  I pray you will know in your heart how loved you are and how welcome you are in the arms of our God, boldly belonging to Him. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 6 - Outstretched Hands, Arms Open Wide

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I seek Your face and listen for Your voice, as I start my day embracing Your Presence in the communion of prayer.  ...

"I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask, to be found by those who did not seek Me. I said, 'Here I am, here I am,' to a nation that did not call on My name. I held out My hands all day long..." (Isaiah 65:1-2).
Lord, You held out Your hands on the cross for me and every day You hold out Your hands in love for me. You're always ready to be sought out, to be pursued, to be embraced in the intimacy of worship and the communion of prayer.

Forgive me when I've not asked for You and not pursued You. Forgive me when I've left You hanging with arms stretched out wide in unfailing love for me and I didn't take the time to love You back. Forgive me and my nation, forgive me and Your church when we've forgotten our way and spurned our first love (Revelation 2:4).

Yet thank You for Your mercies that are new every morning, you're your love never ceases (Lamentations 3:22-23). Thank You that You are faithful even when we are faithless (2 Timothy 2:13). Like the father who longed for the return of his son, You're always ready to be sought out and read to be found whenever we remember You're waiting for us with arms open wide (Luke 15:20).

Like Your mercies, the promise of Your Presence never comes to and end. And throughout the moments of our days, You continue to invite us to come into Your embrace through worship and prayer:  "So I say to you, Ask, and it be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened" (Luke 11:9-10).

So as best as I can and all by Your grace, I choose to ask and seek and knock. I choose to pursue You and embrace You. I choose to not forget my first love, always expressed to me with Your hands stretched out and Your arms open wide. Thank You, Jesus. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  may you ask and seek and knock today, embracing the One who loves you so with outstretched hands and arms open wide. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 2 - Birth by the Word of Truth

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up my eyes, open up my heart, and call out Your name to begin my day centered in You.  ...

"Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of His own purpose He gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of His creatures" (James 1:16-18).

My spirit knows it when I hear Your truth. Something comes alive inside of me. Whether it encourages me and inspires me or whether it convicts me and leads me to repentance, Your word of truth is "spirit and life" to me (John 6:63). It changes me and makes me hungry for more.

So I open up my spirit to hear Your truth, to embrace Your truth, to be changed by Your truth. Lord Jesus, You are the Truth (John 14:6). You are the Good and Perfect Gift of my Father, abiding in me and filling me with Your "Spirit of Truth" -- Your Holy Spirit at work within me to make me more like You (John 14:17). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  may the Spirit of Truth penetrate your spirit, as you come alive in Christ today. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, October 1 - Run the Race Looking to Jesus

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me start this day and every day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit.  ...

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a could of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Lord Jesus, I'm looking to You as I run my race. Set me free from everything that would weigh me down, hold me back, or trip me up. For the sake of the joy of seeing Your face and embracing the fullness of Your grace, I want to press on and persevere. I want to endure and overcome -- not just surviving, but thriving; not just dragging across the finish line, but catching a second wind of Your Holy Spirit.

So I will arise and run with all the strength and passion You pour into my spirit. As best as I can and all by Your grace, I want to run my race to win the prize (1 Corinthians 9:24). I want to "press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14). I want that crown You've set aside for me and for all who run their race looking to You -- "the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him" (James 1:12). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Morning by Morning, September 30 - Everyday God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. Come rule and reign in my heart and the moments of my day.  ...

"Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation... Awesome is God in His sanctuary, the God of Israel; He gives power and strength to His people" (Psalm 68:19).

You are the God of my salvation -- not just on the day I was saved; not just on the day I'll die; not just on the days when I realize I need You the most -- You're the God of my salvation every moment of every day. Daily You bear me up. Daily You give me power and strength. Daily You continue to save me and heal me and free me and fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. You're the everyday God of my everyday salvation.

So each day, I continue to turn to You; I continue to open up my heart and welcome You in; I continue to embrace the gift of God of a life in You, as best as I can and all by Your grace. You are my daily Bread (Matthew 6:11). You are "the Bread of Life" -- "the Bread that comes down from heaven (every day), so that (I) may eat of It and not die" (John 6:48-51).

Lord, fill me up with the fullness of Your life in my heart today. Be my power and strength throughout the moments of my day, O God of my salvation, this day and everyday. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, September 29 - To Love and Obey

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. Make me more like You today.  ...

"They who have My commandments and keep them are those who love Me; and those who love Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love them and reveal Myself to them" (John 14:21).

My obedience is an expression of my love. And because I love You, I want to obey You. I want to honor You with my obedience -- not so that You'll love me, but because I love You.

Some imply that loving God doesn't require obeying God, that the grace of God has replaced the commandments of God. But that's not what You taught. In fact, You said, "Those who love Me will keep My word, and My Father will love them, and We will come and make Our home with them. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word that you hear is not Mind, but is from the Father who sent Me" (John 14:23-24).

Lord, I need Your grace and I'm thankful for Your love and mercy. You are "merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love" (Psalm 103:8). And I need You to abide in Me, giving me the desire and the power to obey Your word and live into Your will to that my life will be fulfilled.

You continue to encourage us to live our lives trusting You know best what we need most:  If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. I have said these things to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete" (John 15:10-11).

I want my joy to be complete and my life to be fulfilled. So help me trust You and obey You and I live and learn to abide in Your love. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend,  may the Holy Spirit will you the desire to love and obey our Lord who loves us so, that your joy may be complete and your life may be fulfilled. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, September 25 - New Beginnings ofRosh Hashanah

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up my eyes and open up my heart to begin my day in worship and prayer with You, my God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  ...

"The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:  Speak to the people of the Israel, saying:  In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of complete rest, a holy convocation commemorated with trumpet blasts. You shall not work at your occupations; and you shall present the Lord's offering by fire" (Leviticus 23:21).

Around the world the Jewish people are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the Head of the Year. Just as at creation, it's a time of joy for new beginnings. With shofars raised and trumpet blasts, the sound of thanksgiving and praise to God goes forth in the spiritual realm.

And as Jesus Christ, the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of all, every Jewish feast, along with all the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms is ultimately fulfilled in You (Luke 24:44-49). You are the Source of all creation, the Source of all new beginning, and the Source of all true celebration, thanksgiving, and praise (Colossians 1:16).

In this season of the ten days before the high holy day of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the Jewish people also preparing their hearts to be cleansed by the blood of the lamb offered in sacrifice (Leviticus 23:26). And You, of course, are the ultimate fulfillment of that feast and Scripture as well (John 1:29).

Jesus Messiah, Lord of All, cleanse me by Your blood of all my sins of the past. Purify me in Your holy fire as I offer my life to you afresh today as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). Let the shofars sound in the heavenly realms and my voice of thanksgiving and praise be lifted high to You for all Your steadfast love and tender mercies that are new to me every morning. You be the Head of my year and the Source of my celebration. I'm excited for new beginnings this year and every day in Christ. I pray the same for all You put their hope and trust in You alone. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Morning by Morning, September 24 - Set Your Mind on the Spirit

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are my Lord and Savior. Be Lord of ever decision and savior of every failure, as I seek to follow You throughout the moments of my day.  ...

"For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.... But (I am) not in the flesh; (I am) in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in (me)" (Romans 8:5-9).

Come, Holy Spirit. You are "the Spirit of God;" You are "the Spirit of Christ" (v. 8:9). Come abide in me. Come arise in me. Come make me more like You. Let me "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18).

As best as I can and all by the power of Your grace, I choose this day to set my mind on You and things of the Spirit, so I can live this day according to the Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Morning by Morning, September 23 - Welcome, Teach and Heal in the Name and Power of Jesus

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name as the first word from my mouth, as I intentionally begin this day centered in Christ. ...

"On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with Him and withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida. When the crowds found out about it, they followed Him; and He welcomed them, and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed to be cured" (Luke 9:10-11).

You modeled ministry for Your first disciples. When the lost, the hurting and the broken came to You for ministry, You welcomed them, You taught them about the kingdom of God, and You healed them.

Just as You modeled it, You sent forth the first twelve apostles to continue to Your ministry in the power of Your name (Luke 9:1-2). And after they returned, You sent forth seventy more to do the same ministry in the same of power (Luke 10:1). And after those seventy returned, You expressed Your heart for more and more of Your disciples to go forth and continue Your ministry, saying, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" (Luke 10:2).

Today, You're doing the same. Today as Your church, we are Your body on this earth -- the body of Christ, filled with the Spirit of Christ, continuing the ministry of Christ. The same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is now at work within and at work though us (Romans 8:11). You continue to send us forth into the harvest of the lost, the hurting, and the broken, saying to us what You said to Your first disciples, "As the Father sent Me, so I send you" (John 20:21).

As Your church, Your body, we are to continue to express Your heart through our lives. "So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5:20). You continue to call us and commission us. You continue to equip us and anoint us to reach out to all who are suffering or sick, lost or afraid, wounded or bound and welcome them, teach them about the kingdom of God, and minister Your healing love in the power of Your name as they have need (James 5:13-18).

Just as You have done for us, so we are to do for others (Matthew 10:8). Just as You have comforted us, so we are to comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Lord, let us be faithful and obedient to Your heart and Your command. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friends,  may the Holy Spirit equip you and anoint you to welcome, teach and heal in the name and power of Jesus. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Morning by Morning, September 22 - He Wakens Morning by Morning

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You in my heart and every moment of my day.  ...

"The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning He wakens -- wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught" (Isaiah 50:4).

Waken my ear to listen, open my eyes to see. I want to hear what You're saying and see what You're doing. I want to hear and speak Your words to sustain the weary, strengthen the discouraged, and inspire the faithful.

"Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, (we are to) serve one another with whatever gift each of (us) has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever" (1 Peter 4:10-11).

Teach me Your ways and give me Your grace to teach the principles of the kingdom of God as You give me the grace to live them. Morning by morning, let Your words and Your will come alive in my spirit. Morning by morning, make me more like You (2 Peter 1:4). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, September 19 - Humility to Hear God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be Thou my Vision and I with Thee one. ...

"Now the man Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth. Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, 'Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting.' So the three of them came out. Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the entrance of the tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forward. And He said, 'Hear My words:  When there are prophets among you, I the Lord make Myself known to them in visions; I speak to them in dreams. Not so with My servant Moses; He is entrusted with all My house. With him I speak face to face -- clearly, not in riddles; and he beholds the form of the Lord' " (Numbers 12:3-8).

Moses heard what You were saying and saw what You were doing; he spoke with You face to face. Moses had the humility to hear God. By the power of the grace of God, he learned the practice of humility -- to willingly choose to be desperately dependent upon You alone.

Lord, help me grow in humility. To grow in spiritual maturity is to seek a heart of humility. And the heart of humility is to willingly choose to be desperately dependent upon You alone. It's Your grace that invites me to desire this and it's Your grace that empowers me to live this.

Humility frees us from the hindrances that keep us from hearing Your voice and knowing Your heart. Humility opens the eyes of our heart so we can see You face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12). And humility is the character of Christ:  "Let the same mind be in (us) that was in Christ Jesus, who ... humbled Himself ... Therefore God also highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name..." (Philippians 2:5-9).

As we humble ourselves in Your sight, You lift us up into the intimacy of Your Presence (James 4:10). So as best as I can and all by Your grace, I seek to humble my heart before You today.
