Morning by Morning, February 13 - "Our Scars Tell Our Stories"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Good Shepherd, lead me beside Your still waters, as I listen for Your leading to start my day embraced by the Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...

"Then (Jesus) said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here and see My hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.' Thomas answered Him, 'My Lord and my God!'" (John 20:27).

Last night after the San Antonio Rodeo, I heard Mark Hall of Casting Crowns tell all of us who stayed for a time of praise and worship, "Your scars are your stories." His words have stuck with me. I'm sure as a youth pastor he's seen many times the scars of the cuts inflicted by hurting and troubled young people as a way to express or control the pain they feel inside. I've seen them too in our ministry of inner healing. In a way, a scar is a sign of healing of what was once a wound.

As Thomas and all Your first disciples saw with their own eyes, You have scars too. Even in Your Resurrected Body, Your scars remain. And You'll carry Your scars for all eternity. Your scars are Your story of Your wounds for us, that we might be healed and whole, forgiven and free. Our sins pierced Your hands and cut open Your side. But when we reach out with our hearts to take hold of how much You've sacrificed in unfailing love for each one of us, we fall to our knees in worship to cry out like Thomas, "My Lord and my God!"

Then our scars - the places where You've forgiven our sins, broken our chains, and healed our wounds - become our stories. They're our stories of Your mercy and love, Your power and grace. For there's no sin You'll not forgive, no chain You'll not break, no wound You'll not heal if we'll humble our hearts to reach out in faith to trust You and Your love for us, as best as we can and all by Your grace. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, February 12 - "That the King of Glory May Come In"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. I open up my heart and let the King of Glory come in. I surrender my life and let the Lord of Glory take control. ...

"Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of Glory may come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle" (Psalm 24:7-8).

Jesus, You are strong and mighty. You are the Lord of hosts, "the Commander of the Army of the Lord" (Joshua 5:14). You are the Lord and Commander of "the armies of heaven" (Revelation 19:11-16). And You have forever defeated the enemy of our souls, with all his plans and schemes for our demise, exposing his lies with Your Truth and shattering his strongholds with Your Word. For You are "Faithful and True" (Revelation 19:11). For You are "The Word of God" (Revelation 19:13).

You have "disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a pubic example of them, triumphing over them in (the victory of Your cross and the power of Your blood)" (Colossians 2:15). And You are "the God of Peace (who) will shortly crush Satan under (our) feet" (Romans 16:20).

Who is this Mighty One? "Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory" (Psalm 24:10). And His name is Jesus - "the name above every name" (Philippians 2:9). His name is Jesus - "my Lord and my God!" (John 20:28) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, February 11 - First Prayers of Praise

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Holy are You; worthy of are You, of all glory, honor, power, and praise. I lift up my eyes and open up my heart to listen for Your leading as I begin my day in the communion of prayer with You, O God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. ...

"I will extol you, my God and King, and bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, and praise Your name forever and ever.... The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.... My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless His holy name forever and ever" (Psalm 145).

Before I think of myself, I want to think of You. Before I start to ask You to help me and guide me and bless me, before I start to ask You to help and guide and bless those who are on my heart, I want to think of You. You are worthy of my first thoughts, my first words, my first prayers of praise.

We tend to go in the direction we're looking. We tend to find what we're truly seeking. And we tend to draw near to the one we're passionately pursuing. So as I look to You in worship and praise and prayer, as I seek You will all my heart, as I passionately pursue You in spirit and truth, I become aware You're so near to me already. Then I remember the promise of Your Word: "When you call upon Me and come and pray to Me, I will hear you. When you search for Me, you will find Me; if you seek Me with all your heart, I will let you find Me, says the Lord..." (Jeremiah 29:12-14). And so I do, all by the power and passion of Your grace. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Morning by Morning, February 8 - "More Than Enough, Fully Satisfied"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I worship You from my spirit, soul, and body. In every dimension of Your Being, I want to honor You from every dimension of my being (1 Thessalonians 5:23). ...

"I have been paid in full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied ..." (Philippians 4:18).

There are times when we feel empty and times when we feel full. There are times when we feel we are straining and striving, pressing in and pressing through to get where we think we need to go and be who we think we need to be. And there are times, praise God, when we feel we can finally just take a moment and rest in the fullness of who You are and what You've done, knowing "It is finished" in Christ and I am in Christ and Christ is in me (John 19:30; Colossians 1:27).

There's always more to do. We've not seen anything yet. And the best is yet to come. But right now, right here, in the Presence and Peace of the One who renews my spirit, steadies my soul, and refreshes my body, I can say to You by the grace of God, "I am fully satisfied. I have more than enough. You've paid it all for me to fully enter into this place of contentment and rest You've prepared for me and for each one who trusts in Your name and all You've already done for all of us" (from Hebrews 4:1-11). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, February 7 - Jehovah Rapha, The Lord Who Heals Us

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your name is the name above every name. So I speak out Your name and listen for Your voice, as I begin my day consciously centered in Christ. ...

"When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter.... The Lord showed (Moses) a piece of wood; he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and an ordinance and there He put them to the test. He said, 'If you will listen carefully the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give heed to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will not bring upon you any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you' " (Exodus 15:23-26).

You are Johovah Rapha, the Lord who heals us. You turn our bitter waters sweet. You give us beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for sorrows, and the garments of praise for the spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3). You are mighty to save, mighty to heal, mighty to deliver. You make us whole and set us free in the power of Your name and Your blood (Isaiah 53:4-5, fulfilled in Christ, Matthew 8:17).

When we're suffering, when we're sick, You call us to come to You and pray (James 5:13-15). "The prayer of faith will save (sozo - save, heal, deliver, and make whole) the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven" (James 5:15). You're the God who heals the brokenhearted and sets the captives free (Isaiah 61:1). And You're "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).

So I praise You and thank You for Your healing grace and power in my life. You are the Lord my Healer. "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all His benefits - who forgives all (my) iniquity, who heals all (my) diseases, who redeems (my) life from the pit, who crowns (me) with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies (me) with good as long as (I) live so that (my) youth is renewed like the eagle's!" (Psalm 103:1-6) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Holy Spirit, I sense You stirring within me and rising up from within me, moving me to express this song of trust and love You're writing in my spirit in worship of God ...

Thank You, Lord, for writing and singing this song on my heart and over my life today. You are a God who loves to Your songs of mercy and love over Your children (Zephaniah 3:17). Thank You for reminding me of Your ever-abiding Presence, always with me and always within me-"Christ in (me), the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27).

Morning by Morning, February 5 - Godly Boundary Lines

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your Word come alive in my spirit; let my spirit come alive in the communion of prayer in these first moment of my morning with You. ...

"The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; You hold my lot. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage" (Psalm 16:5-6).

My Daddy Abba, my Father God, You know best where to set the boundaries. And I believe You want the very best for me - for me and for all Your children, for You are our perfect Father.

Your "Yes" is to bless me and Your "No" is to protect me. Your conviction keeps my conscience clear and Your comfort keeps my heart full. So help me trust You and trust Your boundaries. When I see Your boundaries from the perspective of Your heart of love, I'm strengthened in my sense of security and encouraged in my sense of identity. Your boundaries are pleasant because they express Your purpose of establishing Your best for me and calling forth Your best from me (Hebrews 12:5-11).

So let me never take for granted the goodly heritage I have from my good God and perfect Father, who loves me so and has given me so much - "abundantly far more than all (I) can ask or image" (Ephesians 3:20). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You said if I would hear You knock and open the door, You would come in (Revelation

"Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" (Isaiah 43:18-19)

Lord, let me perceive what You are doing today, what You are doing now. For now, it springs forth. For now, the former things have passed away. "Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJ).

Don't let me look back. Don't let me get stuck. Don't let my expectations of what is to come be defined or restricted by what has already come to pass. Indeed, the best is yet to come. Indeed, "'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.' But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:9-10, NKJ).

These are exciting days. And we've never been this way before. So keep me close to You, keep me leaning into You, that my spirit may be one with Your Spirit and my steps may follow Your lead. In the power of Your grace, my Father God, You have raised me up in Christ and filled me up with Your Spirit, that I "might walk in newness of life" - not just on the day I was saved, but every day I awaken and arise to follow You into the next adventure You've planned (Romans 6:4). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, February 1 - "Not in Word, but in Power"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are my Lord and Savior, my Healer and Deliverer, my Good Shepherd and Best Friend. I love You, Lord, because You first loved me. ...

"For the Kingdom of God is not in word but in power" (1 Corinthians 4:20, NKJ).

You never intended the proclamation of Your Word to be separated from the power of Your Word. You never intended us to settle for the Word of God to be a just a historical Book of empty promises for our lives today.

In the Kingdom of God, the Word of God is manifested by the power of God. And Your power on behalf of us is an expression of Your love for us - Your power to save us with eternal life, healing, deliverance, and all the wholeness and freedom You provided for us to have through the sacrifice of the Blood of the Lamb (Isaiah 53:4-5, fulfilled in Christ, Matthew 8:16-17). "The Lord has made known His power to save!" (Psalm 98:2, NCV)

Yes, Lord. Let Your Kingdom come! Let Your will be done! Here on earth, as it is in heaven, with the promises of the Word of God manifested in the demonstration of the power of God. You are the Word made flesh; and You are alive and mighty, displaying the power and the glory of Your Word in our lives and throughout the earth. This is the Gospel of the Kingdom of God - "it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who has faith" (Romans 1:16). And there is no salvation - no eternal life, no healing or deliverance, no wholeness or freedom - in no other name but the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12).

Praise You, Lord God Almighty - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - for Your Word and for Your power. You are "mighty to save!" (Isaiah 63:1) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, January 31 - Honestly Humble in the Presence of God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I speak those words every morning, my spirit comes to attention. Here I am, Lord - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Speak, for Your servant, Your son, is listening. ...

"When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars that You have established; what are human beings that You are mindful of them, mortals that You care for them?" (Psalm 8:3-4)

Who am I, that You care for me? Who am I, that You invite me into Your Presence? Who am I, that You want to give me the desires of my heart?

You are the Creator of all things. You are not limited by time or space. You are infinitely mighty, infinitely wise, infinitely good. You are perfect and holy. And Yet, You deeply care for me. And Yet, I truly matter to You. ...

When I take the time to truly consider these things, I am overwhelmed and undone. I am humbled. But then in that place of honest humility before You, Your grace comes rushing over me, Your Holy Spirit infuses me, Your Fatherly arms embrace me, and Your Living Word awakens me. "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.... Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (James 4:6-8).

Thank You, Father God, for reminding me how holy and mighty You are. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for reminding me how self-sacrificing and infinitely loving You are. Thank You, Holy Spirit of the Living God, for reminding me how tender and intimate You are. And so much more than I can every imagine or comprehend. O Lord, You are my God. Help me keep honestly humble before You always. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, January 30 - "Completely One"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are One with the Father, One with the Holy Spirit. And in the intimacy and mystery of the communion of prayer, I ask You to draw me closer to the place of being one with You. Your Word expresses Your will for us all to be one with You by Your Spirit abiding in us-"that they may all be one. As You, Father are in Me and I am in You, may they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me" (John 17:21). ...

"The glory that You have given Me I have given them, so that they may be one, as We are One, I in them and You in Me, that they may be completely one, so that the world will know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that those also, whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am, to see My glory, which You have given Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world" (John 17:22-24).

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as best as I can and all by Your grace, I willingly choose to completely yield my will to Your will, my thoughts to Your thoughts, my desires to Your desires, my ways to Your ways, my plans to Your plans. I entrust my life to the life You've chosen for me from before the foundation of the world - "just as He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him in love" (Ephesians 1:4). In this way, make me one with You, one with each other in the Body of Christ, one in ministry to all the world, so that the world may believe that the Father has sent His Son to embrace us all in the intimacy and communion of His love through the bonds of His Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, January 29 - Give, Do Good, and Love

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look and listen; I watch and wait. Come Holy Spirit, draw me near to my Father's heart in my Savior's name. ...

"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful" (Luke 6:32-36).

Give, expecting nothing. Do good, even when no one is looking or even when the ones who are looking are doing evil. Love, even at the risk of rejection, even in the face of misunderstanding or outright hatred. Though Your grace is free, Your calling is high. And clear - if I truly want to choose to live my life like a son of God. The children of the Most High are called to embrace the heart of the Most High.

Lord, I don't think my heart is that high yet. I think there's still too much of me that wants to insist on being right, on being treated right, on all things being just and fair, neat and tidy, even-handed and sure-footed. But Your Word and Your Spirit call me live from a deeper place, where my responses are not determined by someone's actions and my actions are not determined by the responses I desire.

That deeper place is an invitation to live in a deeper level of spiritual maturity. That deeper place is called the Kingdom of God. It's the Kingdom of God abiding inside my heart and expressed through my life. "For, in fact, the Kingdom of God is within (me)" (Luke 17:21). And through the mercy of Your grace, I am a son of the King, a child of the Most High, empowered by God to give and do good and love with my Father's heart. Help me desire it more deeply, so I can live it more fully, as best as I can and all by Your grace. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, January 28 - "The Path of Life"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me beside Your still waters, as I start my day in the depths of Your Presence and the communion of prayer. ...

"I keep the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.... You show me the path of life. In Your Presence there is the fullness of joy; in Your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:8-11).

With the eyes of my heart set upon You and the ears of my spirit open toward You, I am steady and secure, deeply at peace and full of joy. Here in this holy place of Your Presence in the communion of prayer, You ground me in Your Word and fill me with Your Spirit. This is the path of life You've shown me.

And You've taught me to start down this path every day. It's wise - and maybe even necessary - to first spend the first moments of my morning in the deliberate and deep place of abiding in Your Presence. Seeking Your face, listening for Your voice, watching and waiting for Your leading, worshipping You in Spirit and truth, resting in the embrace and confidence of Your tender mercies and steadfast love before anything else is my way of offering to You the first fruits of my day. And then in the power of Your grace, You help me keep You always before me throughout the moments of my day.

This is a good path - the path that leads to life, abundant life in You. Thank You, Lord, for teaching me this path. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Morning by Morning, January 25 - Power, Provision, Protection, and Purpose in the Name of Jesus

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your name is powerful and mighty. And I speak it out as my praise to You and declaration of Your authority over my life and over this day. ...

"You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified His Son Jesus.... And by faith in His name, His name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you" (Acts 3:12-16).

Not by our own power or piety, not by our doing the right things or saying the right words, not by anything we've earned or deserved, but by the powerful and mighty name of Jesus does the God of heaven display His glory on earth. "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved" - "saved" to the uttermost with the eternal life, healing, freedom, wholeness, and peace that comes through Christ alone in the power of the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12).

"Therefore God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11).

Jesus, You are my Lord and Savior. "Jesus Christ-He is Lord of all" (Acts 10:36). I declare Your name to glory of God my Father over my "spirit and soul and body" (1 Thessalonians 5:23). I declare Your name over my past, present, and future. I declare Your name over my identity and destiny, my gifts and calling, my hopes and dreams, my thoughts and desires. I declare Your name over my sins and failures, my missed opportunities and disappointments, my fears and regrets. I declare Your name over where I live, where I work, where I minister, everywhere I go. I declare Your name over every cell in my body, every provision for my finances, every means of Your protection, every dimension of my life. I declare Your name over every relationship, strategic alignment, and bond of trust. I declare Your name over every plan, scheme, strategy, temptation, means of influence and means of access of the enemy of my soul and the weakness of my flesh. And I declare Your name over every victory through the power of the cross of Jesus Christ in my life and my world, throughout all time and space and every dimension. As best as I can and all by Your grace, I declare to You and all heaven and earth, that I desire to leave nothing out from under the covering of the name of Jesus over every area of my life. I believe there's power, provision, protection, and purpose in the name of Jesus. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
