Morning by Morning, September 16 - The Blessing of Unity in the Spirit that Breaks the Curse of Babel Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen up for Your voice to begin my day seeking You with all my heart (John 10:4; Jeremiah 29:13). ... There’s a false unity and a true unity. There’s a unity for evil and a unity for good, a unity of the flesh and a unity of the Spirit. There’s a unity that seeks to make a name for ourselves to live by whatever standards we choose, as we exalt ourselves as the lord and authority of our lives, and a unity that seeks to exalt Your name and embrace Your authority as Lord of our lives. It's been that way since the days of Babel and even before: “Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.’ The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, ‘Look, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let Us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.’ So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth, and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth” (Genesis 11:1-9). So whether for evil or for good, of the flesh or of the Spirit, there is power in unity. In unity, nothing was impossible for them. But when we build our own cities and towers, so that our own creation in our own image is high and lifted up in the heavens to be worshipped and to make our name renowned in all the earth, there will come destruction. What could have been beautiful and powerful, for our good and for Your glory, will be scattered and shattered, confused and condemned. But there’s a better way -- “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3). “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:4-6). In that unity -- in Your true unity -- You command Your blessings instead of babel, Your order instead of chaos, Your clarity instead of confusion: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! .... For there the Lord commanded the blessing -- Life forevermore” (Psalm 133:1-3 NKJV). In Your true unity, we experience Your power and Your answers to our prayers, just as You said: “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in My name, I am there among them” (Matthew 18:18-20). “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you’” (Matthew 17:20). “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes” (Mark 9:23 NKJV). You turned the curse of Babel into the blessing of Pentecost, when Your people sought You in the unity of the Spirit and the agreement of prayer. Instead of confused language, everyone heard the Truth of Your Spirit even though expressed in many languages (Acts 2:8). And then they lived out that unity of the Spirit in a community of faith and experienced the power and the Presence of God among them and within them: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles” (Acts 2:42-3). You invite us to believe in You not merely in ourselves, to build Your Kingdom not ours, to make Your name renown not our own. Revival comes when Your Presence comes down from the heavens instead us trying to lift ourselves up into the heavens. As Your Spirit cried out through the prophet Isaiah:
“O that You would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at Your Presence -- as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil -- to make Your name known to Your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at Your Presence! When You did awesome deeds that we did not expect, You came down; the mountains quaked at Your Presence! From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who works for those who wait for Him!” (Isaiah 64:1-4). Break the curse of Babel from our lives today, Lord! And send down Your blessings of Pentecost in the power of Your Holy Spirit. Align us together in the true unity of the Spirit for the breakthrough of revival in our hearts and in our land! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays
