Morning by Morning, September 20 - Praying for an Unveiling Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speaking Your name, seeking Your face, I look and listen for Your leading, as I seek to being my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... The news reported the tragic, senseless death of a 22 year-old woman in the custody of the “morality police” in Iran who was undergoing “re-education” training for failing to cover her head with a veil. As I read the story, I sensed both compassion and anger, as I imagined life in that world. I can understand modesty; but I also understand merciless control that would keep an entire gender veiled, hidden away, and covered up, upon penalty of torture and death. This Word from Your Scripture comes to mind: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). Some would say it’s none of my business. But my spirit cries out for “freedom.” My heart cries out for every person to be set free and unveiled from everything that would keep them from seeing You and Your glory. The “veils” in our lives take many forms -- “veils” of cloth that cover our head or our face, “veils” that cover our perception of who You really are and who You’ve created each one of us to be in our true identity as children of God, “veils” that cloud our thinking and darken our understanding of the value and significance of every life freely lived without oppressive control, and “veils” that cover our hearts and our spirits from knowing the one true God who loves us, who’s for us, and who wants every one of us to come to know You as You truly are. Come, Holy Spirit. Remove the “veils.” Open eyes to see the Truth of the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Open hearts to receive the love of God from the God who is Love (1 John 4:18). I believe that compassion and even anger that’s stirring in my heart for this woman and her people this morning is an expression of Your heart, moving me to pray for this unveiling by Your Spirit. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words. And God, who searches hearts, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27). Today, I’m praying for an unveiling. Unveil eyes, unveil faces, unveil hearts and minds and oppressive control in every form that every heart can seek You and see You “with unveiled faces” by the “freedom” of “the Spirit!” (2 Corinthians 3:18) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
