Morning by Morning, June 16 - Honoring Our Father and Our Fathers Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are One with the Father, One with the Holy Spirit, and in Your mercy and love, in the mystery of faith and incomprehensible grace, You desire to be one in union with us, as “he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17). ... This Sunday we’ll remember and honor our fathers on Father’s Day. Our earthly fathers are meant to be expressions of our heavenly Father. Our earthly fathers and father figures are to help us know our heavenly Father’s love and protection and provision, to help establish us in the security of our identity and be encouraged in the pursuit of the fulfillment of our destiny. Their words they speak into our lives carry authority to help shape us and make us into who we were created to be, as a father’s blessing into our spirits and a father’s covering over our lives. And of course, every earthly father falls short, no matter how good and loving, as with all the rest of us, for “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 8:23). “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10). Only You, our heavenly Father, the only righteous One, fully reveal and express the glory of God and our Father’s love. But in the sovereignty of Your will and plan for the development of our lives, You desire to love us through our earthly fathers. All they do well, we receive by grace. All they don’t do well, we forgive by grace, just as You have forgiven us. And even in our earthly father’s failings, even in the times and places where we can’t honor all that they did or failed to do, we still choose to honor them as our fathers, just as You and Your Word, even one of Your Ten Commandments, commands us: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). “Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old” (Proverbs 23:22). “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise: ‘that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth’” (Ephesians 6:1-3). Even the red letter Words of Jesus in Scripture underline and emphasize the significance of this spiritual principle: “For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death’” (Matthew 15:4). So for our good fathers, we praise You and thank You and honor them. Even for our bad fathers, we praise You and thank You and honor them. And for the good and the bad, all that was right and all that was wrong, we thank You and praise You that You are our Good Father, our Loving God, who desires the very best for us. You are the ultimate Source of our love and protection and provision, as You establish us in the security of our identity and encourage us in the pursuit of the fulfillment of our destiny. The words of spirit and life and truth that You speak into our lives carry the ultimate authority to shape us and make us into who You created us to be, as our Father’s blessing and Father’s covering with the Father Heart of God over our lives. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God, You are our “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). I honor You and love You this day, on Father’s day, and on every day. For Your steadfast love for every one of Your children of God never ceases and Your mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness, O Lord our God -- our Good, Good Father (Lamentations 3:22-23). In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
