Morning by Morning, June 19 - Spiritually Sensitive to God’s Ever-Present Nearness Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart, at the forefront of my thoughts, and in the middle of all I am and all I’ll do throughout all the moments of my day -- just as You said, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). ... But as I get up from these first moments of prayer and go about my day, let this be more than a theological truth or a spiritual principle. Let this day be filled with my conscious awareness of Your abiding Presence in everything I say and do through every experience and encounter. Make me spiritually sensitive to Your ever-present nearness. Make me so deliberately aware of You that I don’t dare to disappoint You, as if You were looking on in my every action and even reading my every thought -- because, as it turns out, You are! As David found and wrote in Psalm 139: “Lord, You know everything there is to know about me. You perceive every movement of my heart and soul, and You understand my every thought before it even enters my mind. You are so intimately aware of me, Lord. You read my heart like an open book and You know all the words I’m about to speak before I even start a sentence! You know every step I will take before my journey even begins. You’ve gone into my future to prepare the way, and in kindness You follow behind me to spare me from the harm of my past. You have laid your hand on me! “This is just too wonderful, deep, and incomprehensible! Your understanding of me brings me wonder and strength. Where could I go from Your Spirit? Where could I run and hide from Your face? If I go up to heaven, You’re there! If I go down to the realm of the dead, You’re there too! If I fly with wings into the shining dawn, You’re there! If I fly into the radiant sunset, You’re there waiting! “Wherever I go, your hand will guide me; your strength will empower me. It’s impossible to disappear from You or to ask the darkness to hide me, for Your presence is everywhere, bringing light into my night” (Psalm 139:1-11 The Passion Translation). The truth is I couldn’t get away from You even if I wanted to. And the truth is I don’t want to. So take away any desire from me to think things You wouldn’t want me thinking, to desire things You wouldn’t want me desiring, and to do things You wouldn’t want me doing. As David prayed in Psalm 51: “I know that You delight to set Your truth deep in my spirit. So come into the hidden places of my heart and teach me wisdom.... Purify my conscience.... Wash me in Your love until I am pure in heart.... Keep creating in me a clean heart. Fill me with pure thoughts and holy desires, ready to please You.... Hold me close to You with a willing spirit that obeys whatever You say.... For the source of Your pleasure is not in my performance or the sacrifices I might offer to You. The fountain of Your pleasure is found in the sacrifice of my (surrendered) heart before You” (Psalm 51:6-11 The Passion Translation) Let that be my heart’s desire this day and every day -- as best as I can and all by Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
