Morning by Morning, June 14 - Refuge in the Floods Good morning, Lord Jesus. I set apart this time to begin my day in the communion of prayer with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:25). When the floods come, You are our Refuge. At times when it seems the enemy comes in like a flood -- through conflicts or challenges, through backlash or backbiting, through temptations or troubles -- You raise up the banner of Your love and protection and provision over us (Isaiah 59:19). The floods just lift us up to higher ground in You. You set our feet on solid ground. You hold us tight with arms of love. You get us through and even make us stronger in Your strength, more faithful as we see Your faithfulness, more intimate in our surrender to Your embrace as we embrace Your Presence through all we endure. As David learned to turn to You through everything he went through -- whether through the sin of his own actions or the attacks of his enemies against him -- You teach us to turn to You, to trust in You -- whether we deserve it or not -- even especially when we don’t deserve it all, but put our trust and our hope in You:
“I will love You, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer; My God, my Strength, in whom I will trust; My Shield and the Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold. “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. “In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears” (Psalm 18:1-6) Thank You for hearing my cry, for answering my prayers, for being with me through the floods and sorrows and snares. Thank You for giving me faith to keep trusting in You through the rains and floods and winds that would blow me down and beat me up if it weren’t for You -- my Refuge and Rock, my Fortress and Deliverer, my Strong Tower and Shield of Faith. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
